Sure, Amos Kane takes Carter and Sadie to Brooklyn House and explains things to them—and then immediately they have to leave because it’s dangerous. Then Zia takes them to the First Nome and starts their training—and then immediately they have to leave because it’s dangerous. It’s only after Carter and Sadie start rebuilding Brooklyn House as their own place that it becomes a place where they can stay and be safe and train others like themselves.
Yes, it’s true that Percy, Jason, and Magnus have to build reputations for themselves at their new homes in order to be accepted, and it’s true that Percy and Magnus don’t stay for very long before they need to leave on their first quests. And it’s true that Percy works on reforms for his camp after being there for a few years. But it’s not the same.
The Kane siblings revive an old forbidden way of magic. They figure things out mostly through trial and error. They create a space for other kids like themselves to belong, because that didn’t exist at the start of their story.
I wonder if that’s a subtle message about how non-white people are better at creating new spaces for belonging. Or better at making a place for themselves in the world because it often doesn’t exist already.
