Just because your trauma and post-trauma and mental illness don’t manifest the same way as James’ doesn’t make it bad writing. I, and several other people I know, understand exactly where James is coming from and understand exactly why he’s doing it. Not because we’re “giving CRWBY the benefit of the doubt” but because this is how trauma manifests for us. This is how we react to things when we’re pushed too far.
Plenty of people in RWBY with trauma have reacted differently to trauma, have recovered, have gone on to be better people (see: Ruby, Qrow, Taiyang, Blake, Yang, Weiss, Jaune, to name a few). It’s okay to have one character with PTSD go off the deep end in a way that is incredibly relatable to so many of us.
I don’t have the power James does. I don’t have the scope or the people. But I have fallen like this. I have destroyed my life and every relationship I had. I have hurt people, on purpose, because I thought I was doing the right thing. I have compromised my morals in the hopes of winning and hitting a point where I thought I could justify it. And you know what? I couldn’t. And it took a long, long time to come back from that, and plenty of people never forgave me.
Don’t tell me James is unrealistic, don’t tell me James is ableist, don’t tell me James is bad writing, because we have other rep, we have other examples, and I know plenty of people, including myself, who relate so much to this man right now in ways we never thought we would see on a screen.
Something can hurt you without it being objectively “bad”. You can just say you don’t like it. You’re allowed to just not like something. I don’t like Cinder! I just don’t! There’s nothing wrong with that and nothing wrong with liking her! But I’m not sitting here flooding her tag with bad takes and shitty opinions and downright rude, attacking bullshit, because I don’t like her.
You can just dislike something.
And just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it bad writing.
I was out with some friends today, making a character for a DnD one shot that’ll happen next week. And I get home to discover the mess that was finally made public about RT. And I’m disappointed. In RT, for the shit they put their employees through, in the world, for being such that this could have happened in the first place, and in myself for not even being surprised, just tired. And in myself for having a FIRST membership, and maybe funding some of this bullshit.
I love RWBY. And in fairness, Kdin has said that they would work with CRWBY again (even after the shit they were put through during their time with RT). Nothing suggests that CRWBY is a rotten part of RT. But it is a part of RT. And Rooster Teeth is clearly rotten.
I wish I had the money to buy RT from Warner Bros and clean house myself. But I don’t. So I guess my only option is to walk away. Maybe I pirate RWBY after this. But I hate piracy (for myself - no judgement for others). Maybe this is just as far and the story of RWBY goes for me. But if I just keep to myself and hope it will all go away, then, in some way, I’m complicit in all this. Which would probably be the worst option of all.
Fuck.
