Lumpy Gravy Primordial is the first vinyl release of Frank Zappa’s original all-orchestral / no piano people version of Lumpy Gravy recorded for Capitol Records in 1967. This would have been Zappa’s first “solo” work, but it’s release was blocked by the Mothers of Invention’s label Verve / MGM, and the material later incorporated into Lumpy Gravy as we know it. For many years, the only released or circulating versions of this were on an extremely rare 4-track tape (a very short-lived commercial audio format like the 8-track tape, but not), and then in the early 2000s someone finally leaked a needledrop of an also extremely rare stereo acetate copy of the Capitol version. Then in 2008, the three-disc Lumpy Money Project/Object featured the first official release of FZ’s Capitol version in mono, but the 1st movement (”Sink Trap”) is 16 seconds shorter and begins with a different section of music than the acetate version. BUT / AND! in yet another new wrinkle, this 2018 vinyl edition matches the acetate version’s edit and not the LMPO version (meaning “Sink Trap” begins with a 44-second section that re-appears in the 7th movement, “Foamy Soaky”), and no, I’m not just making up a bunch of shit that sounds like actual Zappa nerd facts.
