Hypnovember Day 11 - Prompt: Custody (same fanfiction as Day 1’s entry, but these are entirely different characters with another part of the story)

“You know I’m not an orphan, right?” The man asked, leaning a bit against one gravestone while still being courteous to the hallowed ground.

“When did we say you were, Jackson?” Asked Axel Braintree, close friend and mentor of the visiting mortal. Jax shrugged and got some loose hairs off of his thick mullet, remarking, “Just seems like you guys are arguing over me the same way divorced parents argue over their kids.”

“How ever did you grow to be so quick with your tongue?” Elias Mako huffed. As far as he was concerned, this conversation was merely a waste of his afterlife and Axel’s. And didn’t the boy have better things to do than…THIS?

“Pretty sure it’s called being 20 years old.” Jax replied, remaining witty in the face of the cold fall winds.

It’s short, but that works well next to the somewhat-chaotic context. Jax was a young kid when he learned he had mind-control powers, then was taken in by Mako to be taught how to use them.

Mako, secretly being a massive piece of shit, groomed Jax into trying to rig an election, blackmailed him under threat of his parents’ death, forced him to flee his home, chased after him, twisted his arm from 100 miles away by reaching out to convince him everyone he loved was lying to him…

Yeah, you get the point.

Axel was the only other older hypnotist Jax knew (they met back when Jax was working with Mako) and in an attempt to save Jax’s life at one point, Axel had to sacrifice himself.

Jax defeated Mako after Axel’s death, and Mako’s brain was basically turned to soup, leading him to die not long after.
