I really love The Batman (2022) but one thing that bugs me is *spoiler!* even though he solves all of the Riddler's riddles (he solves the carpet one, just with a little help), he saves literally none of the victims. Mayor? Dead. DA? Dead. Falcone? Dead. Thousands of Gothamites? Dead from catastrophic flooding.
The only Riddler targets who didn't die, if I remember right, were Bruce Wayne (basically just Riddler's bad luck) and Bella Réal, who saw the snipers and saved herself with Gordon's help.
It doesn't bug me in that I dislike it, per se! I just think it's a really interesting writing choice, that Batman fails at basically everything he tries to do in this movie (including keeping Selina in the end, but that's another post). I'm curious if it's meant as a reflection of Bruce's obsession with vengeance and the past, to demonstrate that only by finding closure and refocusing on hope will he be able to help Gotham.

I just said “Dang, I can’t believe they didn’t get Robert Pattinson, he would have loved the chance to throw shade at his past,” but then suddenly they said the joke and I actually got it the second time around.
