In the 7th grade, our school, had a program called the Royal Reader. There was a list with about 30 books that students could check out and read. Once the student completed the book they could answer some questions about it (proving they had read it) and then check out another from the list. At the end of the month, the student who had read the most, would win a special field trip with their favorite teacher to a luncheon celebrating the readers! I was the winner for my middle school, for both the 7th and 8th grade! Because of this, I was fortunate enough to meet Lois Lowry and to this day treasure that event and the book that was one of the eligible titles for the royal reader contest! I’ve taken the opportunity during our social distancing quarantine to re-read Number the Stars and am so glad I did. It brought back so many memories (and tears). Number the Stars is a story of bravery, even in the face of terrifying times. It’s about the ripples each one of us is capable of making and how we can, as individual pebbles, directly change the world with those ripples! What could be more timely? I see so clearly now, how this book has helped to influence my beliefs and my actions since reading it. *I’m happy to give my copy to anyone who’s interested in reading it. Parent and/or child.
