She feels the sudden stirring of air on her calves and the door cracks open. Her guest peers in, unannounced - she feels the gaze of large, dark eyes, bright and doe-like, reflected from the mirror and smiles to herself, twisting around slowly, completely aware that her hair, undone, ripples like waves across her bare shoulders. âDo come in, ma belle - no need to be shy.â
A sly smile plays at her lips. âAfter all, itâs nothing youâve not seen before, is it? Peux tu mâaider, ma douce? There - â She turns back toward the mirror and twists her hair up to the crown of her head, nonchalant, lets it stay there. âPut some pins in for me, wonât you? Anywhere youâd like - Iâm sure youâre wonderful.â Helene sighs and lets go, long, graceful fingers moving instead to the glittering gown draped across the chair. âI trust you completely, see? My husband is so clumsy at it.â She meets Natashaâs eye rather deliberately in the mirror as she adjusts the gold chain around her neck, touches her earrings to make sure theyâre in the right place. âOh he tries, I'm sure - but I find that I much prefer a womanâs touch on these kinds of things." She looks up at Natasha from beneath her lashes. "Don't you? Your hands are much softer.â
She steps toward the vanity and away from the little countess, and lifts the dress from its place. Moving slowly, conscious she is being watched, she slips into the gown. Itâs one of her favorites - deep plum, nearly sheer at the neck. It leaves her collarbone and arms feeling quite exposed. âWell, mon cher?â Helene twists slowly toward Natasha, fabric pooling at her feet. âQuâest-ce que tu penses?â Her lips curl into a smile - almost wicked. âBut here I am ordering you about like a maid when youâre half frozen, Iâm sure - your face is quite red. Must be the cold,â she loops her arm through Natashaâs, leans in a little too close like sheâs confiding a great secret to the other girl. âShall we retire to the drawing room? Thereâs a fire there, and the other guests havenât arrived yet. Iâve told them they shouldnât be here for another half hour at least - you know, I donât like any of them quite as much as I like you.â
