my main problem with how some people talk about pearl x rose is that they're trying to force a monogamous understanding of the relationships when both pearl and rose are shown, multiple times, to not be monogamous as characters, and greg having admitted himself that he knew that about them and stayed anyways. like there was never a big breakup between pearl and rose so rose could pursue greg, pearlrose didn't define their relationship in the more human ways garnet came to define hers. rose was always aware of her lack of humanity and while pearl loved and protected humanity, she didn't want to see herself as apart of it until long-after rose was gone. rose was just with them both and greg's a human that's used to defining his own relationship in human terms. just because pearlrose didn't conform to human relationship labels, and didn't really have well-known gem relationship labels that went beyond superior/inferior, that doesn't mean they weren't together. that doesn't mean greg didn't know they were together while he and rose were together; "i knew how you felt about rose, and i stayed anyway." it's literally just a v-relationship with a hinge (rose) that lets their partner label it themself- pearl wouldn't use a label like that at that point in her life, and greg would never think twice abt it.

"I know it's probably not a Gem thing, probably a little weird…" Greg stepped back from Rose's neck and watched as she peered into the mirror, eyeing the necklace that now sat on her. "But jewelry is a common gift to give among humans, and I saw it and thought of you, and Vidalia's mom didn't want it anymore…" Crap, did that make that sound worse?
He didn't want to give Rose a ring. Not that he was opposed to marrying her, no! But, he had a feeling that their relationship wasn't meant for that. Plus, he couldn't afford it, but he wanted to give her something.
A thank you for being there. A thank you for giving him a chance. A thank you for her friendship, her love.
Something to, maybe not ease the distance that existed in her eyes, but to show his love.
Rose smiled as she fidgeted with the charm of the necklace, a delicate and beautiful teardrop shape. "It's lovely," she said. "What gem is it made of?"
"Pink diamond," he admitted.
Rose stiffened.
"I know, it sounds…" She had admitted that truth to him in a whisper when they learned she was expecting. She had admitted that only Pearl knew, but she wanted him to know. "I love you, you know that, right?"
Rose relaxed.
"…I do. And…I think I would have loved you back then, too." She reached out and took his hand, and he pretended not to notice the faint tremble. "Or, at least, cared."
"I know." He kissed the back of her hand. "And, if the others ask, I can say that I thought it would be funny."
Rose cocked her head. "Funny?"
"Like a victory trophy! You, wearing a piece of Pink Diamond!"
Rose snickered and then started to laugh, and Greg kissed away the tears.
(Years later, Greg would give the necklace to Steven, who stared at it and then sighed. He kept it, though, even if it was never out of its case, and Greg tried not to cry when his grandson started wearing it.)

Testing out new digital markers! Finally I get to experience the feeling of having a full copics set like we all used to dream of in high school... The Steven Universe episode "Story For Steven" detailing Rose Quartz and Greg's first meeting aired ten years ago, so I used them as my canvas today :D 2015 was really a formative inspiration year in cartoons for me, haha.
