When he confirmed he was their vet she’d laughed and stepped closer to him, teasing in that lyrical voice, “Oh, then I’ve already checked you out.”
Unable to resist, she threatened him with a smile, “Do I need to run?”
With a bright smile she said, “Thank you so much, I’m starving.” An artful hesitation, Rose’s teeth caught at the corner of her lip and she asked in a low tone, “Is it safe?”
Rose tamed her smile into sweetness. “Time’s up, precious.”
Rose released him to sweep her bath sheet from the floor. As she straightened, her hand traced a languid gesture. “The door is over there.”
[Jett tells her everyone deserves help if they need it] She stared at him. Jett found himself holding his breath again. The intense focus of her regard laid his soul bare. She said, “What is wrong with you?”
“Real magic Jett, and yes, like the entire way here. I mapped a path to the portal. We can deal with the next step once we’re out of the halls. Now hush. I’m trying to keep you alive.”
“He won’t let that stand in his way, any more than he did your ignored advice. I’m superior to you. We’ve already proved that. Did you want to try again?” Rose held her hand out in invitation, no sign of concern let free. If he touched her, if he saw Jett… she focused hard on the other seer and told him, “I’ll prove it again, the only thing you’ll see in me is your fall from grace.”
She smiled at him, blue eyes alight. Voices rose behind them and Rose went pale. “If we're fast… maybe. If I'm good enough. Jett don't let go, please don't let go.”
“I have to check in with my father or he'll lose it,” she explained, and felt like an adult giving a teenager's explanation. She should do it. She should move out like Athena kept saying. But she'd have to use that money. Besides, if she left, he'd take it out on her mother.
An awkward silence began, so Rose leaned over and murmured in his ear, “I had sex with her on his desk last month.”
Eyes aimed somewhere around his shoulder Rose said, “When I touched you and looked for the future... I saw myself die. I saw you bleeding out. Every time I close my eyes, it's there. I'm afraid to blink. I'm not sure I'm alive. I need you. Touch me again, make me forget the things that never happened.”
“Yes, how could I, his evil minion, do such a thing?” Rose asked as she held a dressing in place and wrapped a bandage over it.
He stepped away. Rose let her hand slip from his sleeve and laughed softly. “Oh come on, I’m not part of your weird rival houses business thing. I barely graduated high-school. I'm just here because dad promised me dinner. And has obviously ditched me. Again. I swear he doesn't care if I starve to death.”
The rim of the tea cup dug into Rose's finger. She reduced the pressure and idly traced the circle, watching her finger. The light caught the gold sparkles in the clear polish coating her nails. "I saved a good person. It's becoming a bad habit. Are you proud? You got to me after all, it seems."
