another language rant i think i ts awesome how last names are usually relaetd to a. family's trade like ik this is a thing fr america at least but in some arabic contexts it applies
more often that not though arabic last names are based around an ancestors first name (if that makes sense?)
like all last names start with 'al' this is the equivalent of 'the' in english
some names can be 'the- archers' or smth (like previous example)
OR
'al' is used prior to the name of teh ancestor, im assuming this is just the natural development because it used to be 'aaal' with an elongation of the vowel (when translated to english both are spelt with one 'a' but one written in arabic different accents are used to differeniate)*, you can usually tell the difference if the name's root is a noun or a common name, and when the 'a' is elongated it no longer means 'the' but 'family of'
the Royal Family in KSA is a great and special example of this bc they 'aal' didn't develop into 'al' it stayed how it is, they're called Aal-Saud, The family of Saud, but when talking abt tribal ancestry last names like al-Qahtani (with i as the possesive suffix) (idrk if it counts as that) can be reffered to as 'Aal- Qahtan' since it acts as an umbrella term for all the sub-tribes ykwim
for exmaples
'Alqahtani ' in arabic looks like: 'القحطاني' while 'aal' looks like: ' آل قحطان' (with a space between them)
