1st Generation (1936) "Topolino":- Known as "Topolino," meaning "little mouse" in Italian. Underwent a minor change in 1949.

2. 2nd Generation (1957) "Nuova 500":- Featured a 479 cc (nominal 500cc) two-cylinder engine producing 13 horsepower. Included a fabric roof that folded fully back, similar to the Topolino. Featured "suicide doors". The "Giacardiniera" (wagon) variation was introduced. The Abarth 695, a performance-tuned version, boasted 38 horsepower.

3. 3rd Generation (2007) "500":- Known by Fiat's internal code "312". Received a facelift in 2016 with redesigned grille, reshaped headlights with LED DRLs, revised wheels, and new paint colors. Interiors were updated with revised controls and a redesigned steering wheel. Engine options in Europe included 1.2 petrol, 0.9 Twin Air petrol (85 or 105 hp), and a 1.3-liter MultiJet II turbodiesel. Introduced with a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay in later models. The "500 family" expanded to include the 500L minivan and 500X SUV, though these shared only the "500" face and not the platform.
