Believers often use the passage to wave away state violence, but thatâs the opposite of what Paul intended.
parking this here because the question does trouble me: what is a Christian woman to do in the face of what seems to be an anti-Christian government? for the way these Christian nationalists behave is not of Christ. they forget that on which all the law and the prophets hang.
Russell Moore gave an answer that uses more of Scripture and of history than most people attempt. I like that. I like context.
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Romans 13:8 (KJV)
The greatest commandment
âThe commandments, âYou shall not commit adultery,â âYou shall not murder,â âYou shall not steal,â âYou shall not covet,â and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: âLove your neighbor as yourself.â Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.âÂ
- Romans 13:9-10 NIV (2011)
Is the application of Romans 13 as straightforward in a republic as it was in the Roman Empire?
This Michigan drama demonstrates that American citizens must be willing to stand up for their rights. Courts cannot simply hand down decisions of their own accord. Michigan courts needed private citizens and businesses to challenge Whitmerâs orders before they could act. Citizens had to go first.
Some did so by offering free hair-cuts on the sidewalks of Lansing. Others pushed back by simply refusing to close their shops. These acts of defiance took courage, and they demonstrated that republicanism requires a spirited body of citizens who know their rights and are willing to defend them.
The real lesson of the Michigan high courtâs decision is that it validates the behavior of Michiganders who have protested Whitmerâs actions since April 30. They were fighting for the Constitution and their constitutional rights.
They exercised the right to protest to oppose an illegal usurpation of powers by their governor. They followed the lead of the state legislature, deferred to the courts throughout the summer, and have at last found vindication in the stateâs highest court. The protestors fought to preserve their republican form of government against paternalism and petty authoritarianism, exactly as all citizens in a free republic should.

The attorney general made the remarks while discussing U.S. immigration policy with law enforcement.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions:
âI would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes.â
Romans 13:1-2, the part that Sessions read:
âThe authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.â
In other words, God Himself directly appointed Trump and his administration, and if you oppose them in any way whatsoever--including objecting to the separation of children from their parents--then youâre going straight to Hell.
(Naturally, these Bible verses had absolutely no application whatsoever when that awful Barack Obama was president. Or any Democrat, really.)
