A cough racks through Milen’s body as the dust blows up in his face. His slide down into the catacombs had been less than graceful and his friends above are shouting in a strange mix of concern and laughing at his misfortune. He shakily stands from the hole he fell down to look towards the sky. It’s far too high to jump, and with the way the sand around him falls in clumps when he tries to grab it impossible to climb.
“Guys!” He shouts up. There’s a collective shout of concern for his safety.
“I can’t climb out!” He yells to them. He tries to keep his panic under wraps with calm breaths as they tell him they’re going to get a rope or help or something. Their words of stay calm are not reassuring. Especially when they all run away.
“Hey don’t leave!” He yells but they are all gone. He groans and clunks his head to the dirt wall. Just his clumsy luck. He kicks the dirt and flips about to sit and wait as best he can. His eyes adjust in the dark and an opening appears before him. He didn’t see it before in the moonlight. The more he stares the more curious he gets. He glances back up to the opening he fell down.
He knows he should stay put, but there’s something odd about the cavern and against his better judgement he stands and shakily walks along the dirt path given to him.
The path gets more and more concerning the more it stops becoming dirt filled and turns to ceramic floors that tap under his feet. Milen is sure he should have stayed put when the hallway he is now walking in has candles that are lit when there is barely any air to keep the flames going.
His blood feels like its being chilled in his body when the hall breaks way to a large cave like room under the earth. Candle line the circular place and above him hangs a chandelier that looks older than he is.
“This is so over the top,” He whispers to himself. He wraps his arms around himself as the cold gets to him. In the center of the room sits a box. He creeps closer to it, common sense flying out the window with every step he takes. The box is not fully closed, the lid set at an angle to expose cushion lining the inside. There are claw marks on the inside of the lid from where he can see it.
Sudden dread fills him and he backs away. This is not a place for him to be. He turns back to the entrance of the cavern and the way he came. His journey back to where he fell is far longer than he remembers that he debates running just in case. When he’s next to the last of the candles from the freaky hall they go out in a sudden wave of air and he runs.
He manages to get to where he fell. He’s about to shout up for his friends to see if they are there when he trips over the dirt beneath him like a clutz. He scrambles to his feet as quick as he can then runs straight into something in front of him.
He lands hard and hisses. Any pain is pushed aside as two red eyes stare down at him. He kicks away from them but they are down in front of his face in a swirl of smoke that appears out of no where. Milen opens his mouth to scream but the being puts a finger to his lips and any sound dies on the spot.
Every fiber in him wants to scream as they get closer but the words do not come. They put their mouth on his wrist and a sharp pain shocks his system too hard. His vision swims and sight is lost on him.
–
Every bit of him aches. He shifts from his position but it hurts to do so. The light assaults his eyes and they aren’t even open yet. He hisses when they do open to reveal white walls. With a groan he looks around and is bombarded by arms around him.
“Shit thank god you’re safe!” Eliza chokes him with her arms around his neck. His hand is squeezed to death by Gupta who is silent but there is a crease in his brows that shows how serious he is. Sadiq is underneath Eliza squeezing his middle which hurts as well. Behind them all is Heracles and Taken who respectfully don’t squeeze him to death.
“You got us worried like mad!” Sadiq yells but it is muffled by his stomach. Milen pats his head and breathes normally once they let him go. A doctor comes in soon after his waking to look him over.
“You took quite a fall,” They say to him. He nods as they check his eyes for any sign of concussion. His eyes keep flicking down to his wrist.
“You’re free to go home,” the nurse says and Milen nods but doesn’t really understand. His friends help him get home, Gupta being the one to explain to his mom what happened as they had apparently skipped out on calling his parents to go straight to the doctors. Not the worst decision his friends have made.
They tuck him in and bring him twelve different cups of water and food to make sure he doesn’t starve. He thanks them tiredly as they leave. He can still hear them downstairs but he is exhausted and can’t stay awake for much longer.

There’s a tapping at his window that wakes him up. He opens his eyes and sits up faster than he should. He rubs his head to get ride of the dizziness.More tapping. He gulps hard and turns to the window where there’s a person there he vaguely recognizes. They blink at him and smile, their red eyes glowing slightly. Milen stifles a shout and falls off the bed in an attempt to put more distance between him and the creature.
He peeks over the edge of the bed and the creature is cringing, trying to peek in. Once they see him they relax and wave excitedly. Milen glances down at the bandage on his wrist, ripping it off with a wince to see the single puncture wound.
“Open the window,” The creature says with their face pressed close to they can be heard. Milen blinks at him and dumbly does what they say, going over to open the window partially.
“Hi,” They say.
“What are you?” Milen says back. They scrunch up their nose at him and smile, a single fang shining brightly.
“Take a guess,” They say. Milen stares at the sharp tooth until the creature closes their mouth.
“i didn’t mean to make you pass out,” They admit with a light chuckle. It’s not the most reassuring apology he’s received and it makes him uneasy. He takes a step back just in case.
“I should have known better than to take so much,” They continue laughing, smiling softly at Milen who is not ready for this kind of conversation.
“Why are you here?” He manages to say. The vampire perks up at the question bouncing on the ground excitedly.
“You found me, you know what that means?” They ask. Milen shakes his head because this night is getting weirder and weirder by the second. The vampire giggles and leans in close.
“You’re my intended. We’re need to get married.” They say. Milen nods in understanding, stops, and passes out for the second time that day.
–
When he wakes up from on the floor and finds it in him to go to the kitchen, the last thing he expects to see is the vampire having breakfast with his mother.
“You didn’t tell me you were engaged!” She says happily and Milen goes right back up stairs to convince himself he is still sleeping.
