Recent Acquisition - Photograph Collection
Original October 1928 caption: “Swannanoa Country Club, situated at an altitude of 2400 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, midway between Afton and Waynesboro, Va., where President Calvin Coolidge will spend his Thanksgiving vacation. The President plans to leave Washington November 26 and return on December 2nd. Swannanoa is one of the most palatial country clubs in the world”.
Finally tracked down the Hawk Watch area at the old hotel up on top of Afton Mountain. It’s around the back behind the shabby hotel.
Saw a Bald Eagle soaring in the distance - white and black marking very distinct. I’ve yet to get a good look of one in my lifetime. My first sighting of a Broad Winged Hawk.
A few Kestrels zoomed by -- no good look of them.Â
So nice to have experts around that can ID the hawks and other birds! A fun experience that I highly recommend.
I did get a little sidetracked with the golden rod and thistle complete with Monarch Butterflies and American or Painted Lady Butterflies (didn’t get close enough to id).

Milepost 0, Blue Ridge Parkway, Rockfish Gap, ole Virginny, 2017.
Just returned from a week driving the Parkway end to end and return. Wonderful - many wildflowers are still in bloom, especially in North Carolina’s higher elevations; the weather was a sampler bag from blue skies to terrific thunderstorms but cool;  and there was no traffic. I felt deprived in 2016 when I did not drive even a bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The 2017 round trip made up for missing last year.Â
Bit of advice, stay on the Parkway and avoid going on into Great Smokey Mountains National Park at its southwestern end. The scenery on the Parkway is at least as grand and does not require driving the bumper to bumper traffic on the road leading across Newfound Gap to the lowest circle of hell, Gatlinburg, TN.Â
