Whatâs up with Colorado Springs?
The Pikes Peak Region offers more than 55 area attractions, including trains, museums, parks, a zoo. Itâs also known for hiking, outdoor activities and attracts thousands of visitors a year. So why couldnât the motels survive?
Colorado Springs is one of those towns where I can explore (via Google Street View) for about 10 minutes and find about 10 dead motels in that span of time.
Clearwater Beachâs Port-Vue Motel was demolished in 2011 and replaced by the parking garage for Pier House 60 Marina Hotel. The Sunny Apt Motel next door was demolished in the 1990s.
The Nevada Motel of Colorado Springs, Colorado was abandoned in 2016. Today, it remains boarded up and fenced off, likely waiting for demolition.
I resisted making a Dead Motels USA Facebook since starting this Tumblr in 2018.
Until a few days ago when I started receiving messages about a fake Facebook page that was stealing my posts and reposting them as their own. They had amassed 25k followers pretending to be me.
Ngl, it felt really weird to watch in real time as someone went through all my photos and videos, took my years of research, revised all my handwritten captions with AI and got millions of views from every nostalgic boomer on the internet.
So I went ahead and reported them for impersonation (all posts have been removed, thankfully) and made a Facebook to combat that happening again in the future.
I'd appreciate it if you would follow the page I made.

Oh nothing, jus thinking about old Florida again â¨
Tell me why every tourist town had a motel called the Carousel Motel.
Pictured are multiple Carousel Motels (Wildwood, New Jersey, Reno, Nevada, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Anaheim, California and a pamphlet from Miami, Florida). All closed now.
The Pilgrim Spring Motel of North Truro, Massachusetts opened in 1955 with 44 rooms. In 2006, most of the motel was demolished and Artist Jay Critchley turned the A-frame office into an art installation called the Beige Motel. He coated the building with sand, opened the interior as a gallery and lit up the exterior with various colored lights at night. in 2007, he attempted to sell it on eBay, with no takers. It was eventually demolished. The property is now Truro Tradesmenâs Park. Source
Always thought this motelâs original name was Pilgrim Spring Motel but turns out it was actually the Peterâs Hill Motor Lodge, pictured in this late 50s photo.
Dead Holiday Inns, before and after being abandoned.
According to Google, the Nesbit Motel of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania is permanently closed.

Opened as a Holiday Inn, closed as the Mountain View Lodge. Sitting abandoned since 2015. Located in Corbin, Kentucky. Sources 1 + 2
Clark's Motor Lodge of Everett, Pennsylvania now operates as Bygone Days, an antique store.
After closing, the Alexis Diner of Denville, New Jersey was abandoned for five years before eventually becoming an Urgent Care.
The Falcon Lodge of Kings Beach, California will be renovated and reopened after being abandoned for over 5 years. Source

The City Center Motel of Seaside, Oregon (pictured in 1958, 2018 and 2024) has been replaced by a new, modern hotel called The SaltLine Hotel.
Spot the differences between these before and after shots.
Besides 70 years between them, there really arenât too many changes.
Pictured are photos of Capon Springs Resort in High View, West Virginia, then and now. A very alive hotel, one of the best ones Iâve visited.
Stepping on this property is like stepping back in time. The hotel buildings, many built in the 1930s, are obviously well cared for. The grounds are immaculate. Everything feels intentional and timeless.
There are no screens here. Barely any phone service. Everyone eats their meals together in the dining room. You can spend your day laying in the sun, in a mineral bath, by the pool. You can read a book with no interruptions.
They donât advertise. They really donât have to. Most guests are long time visitors or a friend of a friend of a friend of someone who started coming here in 1942.
Family owned since opening in the 1930s. Pre-1930s, this land was the site of a grand hotel, which had been abandoned after a fire. What remained were ruins and a mineral spring which still flows today.
Their mission statement may be one of my all time favorites: âWe will be a home away from home where guests are family. We will cherish traditions and simple comforts and foster guestsâ relationships with family, friends and nature. We are unapologetically timelessâour charm is our sameness, simplicity and predictability.â đĽš
