PERSONAL BEST (1982) dir. Robert Towne Young sprinter Chris Cahill is having difficulty reaching her potential as an athlete, until she meets established track star Tory Skinner. As Tory and her coach help Chris with her training, the two women form friendship that evolves into a romantic relationship. Mission: Impossible was released on 22 May 1996.
Paramount Pictures owned the rights to the Mission: Impossible TV series (which ran for 7 seasons from 1966-1973) and had wanted to make a film version for years, but didn't commit until Tom Cruise wanted it to be the first film for his recently formed production company. Cruse hired Brian de Palma to direct and de Palma brought on David Koepp, Robert Towne, and Steven Zaillian to write the screenplay.
Mission: Impossible was the first film to open in more than 3,000 theaters, and despite mixed reviews, the film went on to be the 3rd highest-grossing film of the year and would go on to spawn 7 sequels.
