The studio smelled like hairspray, hot lights, and expensive coffee that no one ever actually finished.
You were used to it by now.
The rhythm of it all, the waiting between shots, the quick changes, the stylists adjusting things that didnโt actually need adjusting, and the polite smiles that came and went on cue.
What you weren't used to, though, was how much you missed Ryan in moments like this.
A month shouldnโt have felt that long, but it did.
Especially when your phone was full of missed calls that youโd returned half asleep, voice notes across time zones, and photos of the locker room that were meant to make you feel closer but somehow just made the distance sharper.
โOkay, tilt your head slightly,โ the photographer called out.
You shifted, chin angled towards the light, hand resting on your cheek.
Smile.
Click.
Smile.
Click.
And then.
โHold on.โ The photographer lowered the camera slightly.
โIs everything okay?โ
โYeah,โ he said slowly, looking at the door to your left behind you.
Which was strange, because everyone in the room seemed to pause at once, staring at the door.
You turned to look, and that's when you saw him.
Leaning against the doorway like he had every right to be there, hoodie slightly wrinkled from travel, hair a mess, which suggested he had run his hands through it a few times, backpack on his shoulder.
It was Ryan.
And for a moment your brain didn't actually process it, because he wasnโt even supposed to be here.
You froze for a moment before you blurted out, โWhat are youโฆโ You started, but your voice didnโt really seem to work.
He pushed off the doorframe. โI finished early.โ
โRyan.โ
โOkay, maybe I convinced a few people I was finished earlier than I actually was.โ
โThatโs notโฆ youโre supposed to be in Washington.โ
โI was.โ
A moment passed.
You stared at him, and he stared back, trying not to smile too much.
Then it clicked, โYou flew here.โ
He shrugged like it wasnโt even a big deal. โIt was only a flight.โ
You just stared at him.
Behind you, someone in the studio asked. โDo you want to take a break?โ
The photographer looked like he was trying to pretend this was normal but failing.
You didn't answer.
You weren't even sure you'd actually heard the question.
Ryan had already started walking towards you.
โYou said a month felt too long,โ he said as he got closer.
โI didnโt sayโฆโ
โYou did.โ
โI said it felt long.โ
โExactly.โ
He stopped right in front of you, arms reaching out to wrap around your waist.
He was close enough that the noise of the studio seemed to fade.
Close enough to see the tiredness beneath his eyes, even though he was clearly trying to ignore it.
And close enough that your chest tightened in that familiar way that you had been trying not to think about for weeks.
โI was going to wait until you were done,โ he admitted.
โWhat changed?โ
Ryan looked at you for a second.
โSeeing you wasn't the same as being with you.โ
You felt your heart squeeze.
โWatching you from over there...โ he glanced back towards the doorway, โ...felt ridiculous when you were only a few metres away.โ
And that did something to you.
Something warm settled in your chest, making the entire studio feel too bright, too loud, and suddenly not important at all.
Your breath hitched. โYouโre ridiculous.โ
He smiled properly now. โYeah, but you missed me.โ
You scoffed, but it didnโt land properly.
Because he was right and he knew it.
Your hand reached out before you even realised it was moving.
Your fingers curled around the sleeve of his hoodie.
Like you needed proof he was really there.
He was.
โYou're really here.โ
โYeah.โ
You shook your head, still staring at him. "I can't believe you're here."
And there it was.
The moment where everything stopped mattering.
The photographer cleared his throat somewhere behind you, reminding both of you that the studio hadn't disappeared.
But neither of you pulled away.
Instead, he leaned his forehead against yours. โYou're almost done, right?โ
You glanced at the set behind you, then back at him. โ...They can wait just a little bit longer.โ
His smile widened.
โGood answer.โ
And then he finally kissed you, right there in the middle of a working photoshoot.
Somewhere behind you, a stylist laughed quietly.
The photographer sighed dramatically.
โWell...โ he muttered. โGuess we're getting candid shots today.โ
