Kennet House and The Woodlands Estate were iconic 1930s housing schemes in Smedley, Manchester. Built in 1934 they were beautiful designs and state of the art housing at the time, but by the 1970s had become poorly maintained and neglected. They were demolished in 1979.
This image is taken from the book "The rebuilding of Manchester", authors E.D. Simon and J. Inman. The flats were built in the mid thirties (1936?) and would be named Kennet House. Smedley Road, Cheetham. By the eighties they were derelict and eventually demolished. They were brick built and part rendered in white. For fairly obvious reasons they were nick named The Queen Mary. The interior grounds were landscaped and lawned. Placed in the landscape on one side of the River Irk with Queens Park on the other side, this today would be a very prestigious development.
