I havenât watched V8 yet, but is it sad that I want Salem just to win already and defeat RWBY+. I love her as a villain. Sheâs great, even though I wonât ever get over what she did to Oz (my favorite). I just donât want them to redeem her or her to get a happy ending with RWBY+ as the heroes. Thatâs all I want from this show anymore since it derailed so far with characterization and plot.
Salem as a concept is compelling. Though it was condensed into a 20 minute flashback, we got to watch how she went from victim (locked in a tower), to hero (fighting alongside Ozma), to misguided (trying to bring Ozma back from the dead, even if I still think thatâs not nearly as taboo in a magic world with gods who willingly grant wishes as it would be here. Why does the concept of accepting death exist when death is preventable??), to victim again (suffering under a punishment far too severe for the âcrimeâ), to antagonist (raising an army/lying to those who followed her), to full blown grimm monster who wants to use her children as eugenics tools to rule the world in her image. Thatâs a lot! Combine it with her cool aesthetic and the staggering power she holds - how in the world do the heroes defeat her? - and youâve got a recipe for a great villain. Provided you actually do things with her in the present. I love Salem as a villain too, just not always how sheâs used as a villain. Having her absolutely decimate the cast this Volume would do three crucial things: re-establish her as a threat, force the cast to confront their choices via horrific repercussions, and tie this period back to Volume 3 (another Fall) so it no longer feels like the show is just meandering plot-wise without direction...Â
As for potential redemptions, Iâm particularly wary of anything they might do with Salem compared to other characters. Iâve spoken before about how frustrating it is that Raven - abandoning, joining Salem, attacking the group, killing Maidens Raven - has been shown more compassion by the cast/the story than characters like Ozpin and Ironwood, allies who have made hard - but quite justifiable - choices. I worry that soon weâll get the same with characters like Emerald, Mercury, and Neo: âOh, itâs okay that you helped bring down our school. And have continually attacked us. And worked directly under Salem, happily recording the carnage you created. You deserve redemption. The guy who kept a secret and the guy who tried to save lives? No, not them.â Meaning, Iâm not against the concept of them getting redemption - especially the clearly misguided like Emerald - but when others far more deserving of it donât? We already have this comparative problem that Ruby begs Raven to join them but canât be bothered to try talking to Ozpin once over weeks. All of which is to say, if that ever expands to include Salem, if Salem starts getting anything resembling a redemption after the show has gone so hard to villainize the good characters making impossible choices... that will in no way be satisfying lolÂ
