I haven't talked yet about it here, but in my current photography class has been working through Rick Sammon's book Photo Quest and asking questions about the text in class. This week, we covered criticism in photography and I figured I could share my thoughts here.
"I find myself frustrated with Sammon's view of criticism. In personal experience, criticism is one of the ways that I grow most in design. Careful critiquing of a friend’s work is one way I feel respected and show respect to fellow artists. There is a difference between positive and careful criticism versus plain hating, but the dismissal of good faith criticism made this chapter a difficult read."
I don't mean this to be a slam of the book, or of Rick Sammon, but it takes two when giving and accepting criticism, and the way an artist approaches that conversation can make a huge difference on the outcome.
