From âMan In The Mirrorâ to âEchoesâ
It has been 12 years since I fell in love with music. It was an interesting journey on discovering artists that meant a lot to me.Â
Hereâs a small timeline of artists have a special place in my heart.Â
April 2008 - I was 10 years old when I discovered Michael Jackson and it all began there.
Michael Jackson was pretty much the only thing in my childhood that stood out to me. I was going through a difficult time in my school and his music was the only thing that motivated me to get on with my life. His charisma, his dance moves, his fashion statement and his music - was just amazing!
First Song : Bad
Favorite Song : Man In The Mirror
Then came so many artists from the legendary Motown label - which included The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Riche and so on ---Â
March 2014 - I discovered Coldplay during my High School years. It was a massive shift from old school music to Contemporary. But when i started listening to the later albums such as Mylo Xyloto , i realized that i was more into contemporary rock than contemporary pop.Â
First Song : ParadiseÂ
Favorite Song : Everything from the album âViva La Vidaâ and âA Rush Of Blood To The HeadâÂ
Coldplayâs music further drew me into Imagine Dragons, One Republic, Maroon 5 and all the contemporary stuff we may have encountered with, during the 2010s. -- out of all the bands apart from Coldplay, Imagine Dragons stood out to me the most.Â
First Song : Radioactive
Favorite Song : Shots, GoldÂ
Some time during my final years in my high school - for some reason, i reverted back into old school and for some reason i felt young and fresh - listening to them .Â
And thanks to Coldplay, i discovered one of the most misunderstood bands in the world.
On November 2015 - I discovered a-ha.Â
And honestly, it was like a new dish which eventually became my favorite.
This band impacted me so much that â I started developing feelings for that one particular guyâ. I had a proper crush on that guy for years - it coincided with my college years, my studies in literature and psychology -- to such a point that, he made me understand my sexual orientation.Â
Morten Harket.Â
Never in my life, i had that thought that i would feel emotionally and spiritually connected with him, his music and his wonderful voice.Â
By the time i have reached my final year in my undergraduate course, I began to understand the philosophical aspect of a-haâs music - just to realize how much the world has lost the ability and the chance to witness the beauty of their creations. Dismissing them as a teeny bop band and reducing them into one song was a massive mistake.Â
I was glad that i discovered this band. It was beautiful.Â
First Song : Hunting High And Low
Favorite Song : East Of The Sun West Of The MoonÂ
a-ha made me discover other synth pop bands such as Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, The Cutting Crew, Spandau Ballet.
a-haâs 4th album - East Of The Sun further sparked my interest in Progressive and Psychedelic Rock and guess which band a-ha introduced me to..Â
This is soo insanely beautiful , I canât :â)Â
And yes, I had a thing for Jim Morrison.
First Song: Light My Fire
Favorite Song: Riders On The Storm , Strange Days, Break On Through (To The Other Side)Â
My sophomore year was defined by Psychedelic and Progressive Rock music. Thanks to The Doors to begin with.Â
I was introduced to the OG of Progressive Rock way before I started listening to Michael Jackson. Sometime in Feb-March 2008, there was this guy in my class who sang âWE DONâT NEED NO EDUCATIONâ as a silly protest for more recess and playtime hours - and i kept humming that tune for quite a while (without knowing anything about the background of the track). In fact, that song ( Another Brick In The Wall pt 2) was the FIRST ENGLISH SONG I HAVE HEARD IN MY LIFE.
It took me 10 years to finally learn the name of the artist and actually listen to the discography.Â
Around March 2018 , a friend of mine told me to listen to âThe Dark Side Of The Moonâ by Pink Floyd.Â
And IT BLEW MY MIND - like crazy.Â
PINK FLOYD OFFICIALLY ENTERED MY LIFE DURING MY SOPHOMORE YEARS IN COLLEGE. And being an Arts students, I was drawn into the philosophy of their music.
I also had a platonic crush on the guitarist lol.Â
The COVID-19 Pandemic also introduced me to the Psychedelic roots of the band as well, and Syd Barrett.Â
First Song : Another Brick In The Wall (pt 2) // Astronomy Domine
Favorite Song : Echoes // Apples And Oranges, Paintbox, Everything from Meddle, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals , The Wall , The Division Bell
Out of everything I have listened, some of the most amazing songs to ever exist was -- Man In The Mirror, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, East Of The Sun and Echoes.Â
Damn, Echoes was just like -- OG of Music and symbolically my current favorite song of all time.Â
