Enrique was fired bc the RFEF needed a scapegoat. However, I truly believe that Enrique got the most he could’ve out of the 2022 wc squad.

Spain was the most cohesive and tactically organized squad at the 2022 wc with the exception of maybe Argentina. However, they were doomed by the fact that they lacked a single attacker capable of dribbling a defender (for reference, the closest things he had to wingers were Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and post-injury Ansu Fati). Spain had the perfect foundation, they just lacked any incisive forwards capable of cutting in from the wing.

The only dramatic difference between the Spain team that got Enrique fired and the one that won the euros is the availability and development of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, two of the most potent 1v1 threats in Europe. If Enrique had access to either one of those two Spain would have been in contention, with both they’d have been the tournament favorite.

That’s why Spain “suddenly got so good”; they were already a disciplined, creative machine that, all of a sudden, stumbled into the best wing duo in national football.
