In football they call it an audible, where the quarterback approaches the line of scrimmage, takes a second look at the defense and changes the play. Meaning: what he sees is not good. It’s plans versus life. It’s not liking the cards on the table. But are the cards truly bad? Are the skies dismal and foreboding or are they just brooding in blue, even resonant in their cobalt truth? In fact you might have night vision, you dark charmer, and find the world richly radiant once again. Perhaps the disaster may yet be avoided. The Ten of Swords is the lord of ruin, the corpse in the ditch at the end of the miserable muddy road, but at least now the battle is settled beyond question. Those swords can be plucked, and taken away, down a different path. Move on. But this is only possible if you can look disaster in its face, and see its painful value. Do not let your sacrifice be in vain. This is empathy for the ugly, wriggling bug of failure, an attempt to flip it on its back, to get down on the floor and examine it in detail, to see it most clearly, before standing again to carry it outdoors or crush it underfoot. Remember, persons can be reasons, and the science of language and meaning is not really a science. It's a room with tools, and mysterious symbols in your head, where a hammer can build or destroy, or disappear, it's simply how you hold it.
