goobers i need your help/advice because i lowkenuinely could use it and idk what else to do
so i've been getting several dms and comments from my tiktok asking if i do commissions, to which i say not at the moment because i've never done them before and i don't exactly know how it works, which is something i've said a few times on here. i was thinking about starting them maybe in the beginning of 2026 (if not then definitely at some point during the year), like doing sketch commissions at first, but here's the thing.. i have a few questions and i need some advice from other fellow artists. some of these might sound silly but i'd just really like to know the answer before i were to start actually doing commissions..
is it okay to draw disney fanart for commissions?
THIS is what i'm most curious about. i ask because i know disney is strict on their guidelines and copyright stuff, but like.. i've seen other artists get commissioned to draw disney fanart, including selling stuff that is considered disney's property and nothing's happened to them. still not 100% sure though because i don't want disney dragging me to the pits of hell because i got paid to draw fanart of a movie they don't care about. if that's not the case, and it turns out disney doesn't mind if you do commissions, then that'd be awesome-sauce to know.
what's a reasonable price for commissions?
i don't want to over-charge and be like "oh you want this? COOL IT'LL BE $70-$100!", because i don't really want to charge people that much 😭 doesn't feel right to me idk why. i feel like a reasonable price for my art would probably be a maximum of $30, but again i'm not too sure, i don't know how i should charge when it comes to that.
how can i communicate with customers?
i'm not sure if i want to dm customers on here, but i thought about using discord, and then just using an alt account that i don't usually use (i've used it like once) to communicate with my customers, rather than using my main/personal discord; but then again i feel conflicted about it bc idk if that's "safe" i guess, but i don't know where else i should 🥲 now i did see some people recommend using google forms to collect commissions first and i thought that was a cool idea, just don't know how that process is tho lol.
is it okay to add my watermark?
only asking because unfortunately my artwork has been getting stolen a few times now, which include my watermark being edited/cropped out :( so just to play it safe, i'd would still want to add a watermark (not gonna make it insanely large though) but i'm not sure if that's okay. would it be a good idea to make a watermark for specifically commissions only though?
if anyone could help answer these questions, that be really awesome; and if you want to sprinkle in some extra advice as well, i'd REALLY appreciate that too :]
