Trailing arbutus heath,
Epigaea repens
Probably one of the more inconspicuous members of the heath family, these Appalachian wildflowers are widely associated with lithophytic assemblages. They bloom as early as late February depending on micro climate, however, are more associated with May bloom times. These small evergreen wildflowers are easy to miss as the flower umbels are usually hidden by both leaf litter and their own winter tattered foliage.Â
These photographs were taken at Grey’s Arch Pass, Red River Gorge, KY Mid way up the local cliff face. March 15, 2018

A orange Ludwigia repens, sticking out among it’s bretheren abd the other plants. While orange variants and hybrids like Ludwigia sp. ‘Atlantis’ are not unheard of, the odd coloration likely comes from an deficiency, possibly iron. Though I would not mind having my own, personal mutation.
Ludwigia Repens Distribution
North American native doesn't mean only native fish, but plants as well. Ludwigia Repens is one such species that covers much of the southern US as shown below (data via the Institute for Systematic Botany):
This species is loved by aquarists for its bright red color under high light conditions and its hardiness under suboptimal conditions. Even more interesting is the wide degree of polymorphism this species exhibits, meaning specimens collected in different geographical areas can look very different.
Perhaps more exciting than this is the relative ease this species crosses with other members of its genus, allowing aquarists to create designer cultivars including ‘rubin’ ‘super red’ and ‘mini.’Â
