I'd forgotten just how hard Sirius tried to kill Peter. He plans carefully for a time everyone else will be out of the Gryffindor Tower, but is stymied by the Fat Lady because he doesn't have the password. With Crookshanks' help he gets Neville's list of passwords and tries again, WHILE EVERYONE IS IN THEIR BEDS ASLEEP. It only doesn't work that time because Peter had already faked his death (again) and wasn't there! Which is its own layer; Peter and Sirius know each other, and Peter in particular knows well enough what Sirius is capable of to take extreme measures to evade him. And meanwhile there's Remus who's finding out from the papers that the Dementors have permission to suck out Sirius' soul when they find him all while he's trying to teach James' son how to cast a Patronus and getting to hear awful details about how he and Lily died in the process. It's all so tense and SO well done.
