I wish my husband, Alan Rickman, were still alive to see this cancer test â Rima Horton
English re-translation of Alan Rickman Vietnam Fanpage
Horton, 78, first met Rickman 60 years ago at the Brook Youth Theatre group in Shepherdâs Bush, west London, when he was 19 and she was 18. Her first impression of him was that âhe was an exceptionally good actor,â she said. âHe stood out even when he was very young; he was always on another level.â
It was a remarkable career, but Horton feels it was cut short. In January 2016, aged 69, Rickman died in hospital a few months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. âIt was a terrible shock; we had no idea,â Horton said of the diagnosis.
In June 2015, the couple were in Los Angeles while Rickman was promoting the period film A Little Chaos when he noticed âa very uncomfortable pain in his leg,â Horton said. They thought it might be deep vein thrombosis and went to see a phlebotomist, who discovered a small blood clot and, worried it might be something more serious, advised Rickman to see a doctor as soon as they returned home. âThat led to the scans and the discovery of the cancer,â Horton said.
âAt first, we told no one except family. Alan didnât want people to look at him and say, âOh, how sad,ââ Horton said. They were not explicitly told it was terminal, but âwe knew it was fully developed and had spread. I didnât Google anything â I didnât want to know â but we knew what that meant.â Rickman underwent chemotherapy, and Horton believes it helped him live about three months longer than expected. âWe knew the chemotherapy wouldnât work, but you still live in hope,â she said. âYou tell yourself, maybe weâll be the exception.â
Rickman and Horton were friends for a decade before beginning a romantic relationship and did not marry until 2012, in a private, simple ceremony in New York. They had no children, because they âdidnât want them and it would have been difficult with both our careers. Neither of us felt a strong urge; I donât regret it,â Horton said. She was formerly a senior lecturer in economics at Kingston University and a Labour councillor in Kensington & Chelsea from 1986 to 2006.
Horton still watches Rickmanâs films. Her favourites are Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990) and Galaxy Quest (1999). She believes he was proudest of the political play My Name Is Rachel Corrie, which Rickman co-produced with Katharine Viner (now editor of The Guardian) and directed at the Royal Court Theatre. The play is based on the diaries and emails of activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli soldier aged 23. âHe took everything he did extremely seriously,â Horton said. âHe couldnât do any job without giving it everything he had.â
To mark the anniversary of his death this month, Horton is organising a raffle of a signed Harry Potter book, autographed by cast members including Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Rupert Grint. âSnape is a wonderful character, and Harry Potter was a significant part of Alanâs life,â she said.
In 2021, Horton became a trustee of Pancreatic Cancer UK. The money raised by the raffle will go towards developing a breath test currently being trialled at Imperial College.
Horton does not dwell on âwhat ifsâ, but feels âimmensely sad that he could have given so much more,â she said. She believes the one role her husband never had the chance to play was King Lear. Her fondest memories are not of premieres or parties, but of âthose early days in Manchester and Leicester, when Alan was playing small roles in touring productions. I remember that time with enormous affection. He was always with me. He came with me everywhere, all the time.â

âRima Horton said: âI got involved with Pancreatic Cancer UK because Alan died of pancreatic cancer, and Alan was only 69 and had so much more to offer the world.â
Rima Horton made the comments by Tower Bridge in central London where almost 800 trainers, representing the number of people who die from the pancreatic cancer each month in the UK, have been laid ahead of the London Marathon.
Ms Horton said her late husband was not only an âextraordinary actorâ but was âincredibly kindâ and would do anything he could to help others. âIf he could make a phone call, if he could write a letter, if he could put two people in touch with people, he did.â
âI know people say to me often when theyâre in any sort of difficult situation: âNow, what would Alan do here?â because he did have a reputation of being not just wise, he just had a very good intuition about things and about people which is one of the reasons he was a good actor.â (âThe Telegraphâ, 15 April 2025)

Just my two cents on Alan Rickmanâs diariesâŚ
I've seen some people say they refuse to read Alan Rickmanâs diaries out of respect. I understand the initial hesitation â I felt it too. But after reading them, I realised they are neither invasive nor inappropriate. What feels more contradictory is rejecting the book while still engaging with quotes and excerpts shared everywhere. To me, the diaries are a quiet, thoughtful legacy.
For me, they became a way to feel him closer â as if he were talking quietly on the phone, sharing fragments of everyday life, small frustrations, moments of joy. Nothing sensational, nothing intrusive. Just the voice of a thoughtful man observing the world around him. And Iâm certain that his wife Rima curated what was shared with care and love, protecting what truly belonged to their private world. What remains feels not like intrusion, but like a gentle, generous presence.
