The word God (in reference to the Christian or Hebrew God) is etymologically a plural. The ancient Hebrew word from which God is translated is 'ĕlōhīm. What is interesting about this word is that it makes the nature of the deity it describes ambiguous. In ancient Hebrew -im indicates a plural such as -s (Dogs, cats or aliens ) in modern English. The second interesting fact about the word 'ĕlōhīm is that in biblical Hebrew there are no capital letters thus there is no way for sure that scholars today can say whether 'ĕlōhīm is a proper noun or not. Thus God actually could mean God, Gods, god or gods.
