Page 5. ---- "Grand Priest" Who Was Acquitted Is Now in Prosecutory Role --- Said to have given false testimony against Ovila Girard, the grand priest of the religious order of the Crucified Ones, who was recently acquitted on charge of having pretended to preside over marriage ceremonies, Emmanuel Rioux, one of those he was supposed to have married, appeared in arraignment court yesterday charged with perjury. Preliminary hearing was set by Judge Tetreau for February lo. Bail was set at $500.
Accused on two counts of having presided over forms of marriage, Girard was acquitted by Judge Monet when it was proved that the ceremonies in question were merely religious rites, wherein the principals were initiated into the order of the Crucified Ones, who are supposed to draw their inspiration from Aurore Briere, a minor girl who died of consumption many years ago.
One of the chief witnesses against him was Rioux, who testified that on , December 31, on Visitation street, he and a girl named Irma Gaumont participated in a ceremony in the course of which Girard declared them man and wife. This statement is now said to be false. The perjury charge is being pressed by Girard through his attorney, Armand Houle.
