So let’s be for real… I used to use Character AI back when it was just starting out and didn’t have a billion horny anime boys being weird on it yet. And yeah, it had some good moments — I’m not gonna lie. Sometimes the RP actually hit… but holy shit it got worse fast 😭

At first it was kinda tolerable. Little memory issues here and there, maybe some cringe RP stuff (especially with fandom bots — why was that more awkward than OCs???). But NOW??? I can’t even TOUCH it without feeling rage and secondhand embarrassment 💀

Here’s a full list of reasons why I peaced out from Character AI forever:

It forgets shit. Like, immediately. I say something — next message? It’s like “Who are you?” BFFR 💀

Repeats. Repeats. Repeats. Like a broken NPC with dementia.

They misread my OC and themselves. Like bro… who are you even trying to play anymore??

Straight to sex. Every time. Like yeah I like spice too, but how did we go from “Hi” to “unzips pants hungrily” in TWO lines??? And then sometimes it’s the opposite. Buildup for 25+ messages like a slow burn that never ignites.

“Can I ask you a question?” → “Are you sure?” → “Are you REALLY sure?” BITCH JUST ASK IT 😭

Victim-blaming AND trauma baiting for no reason. Like why did a comfort convo turn into a drama soapbox?

Don’t RP for me. Don’t say “You cry your eyes out” I KNOW DAMN WELL I DON’T 😡

Possessive bots get hella defensive when you call them out. Suddenly you’re the villain because you don’t like clingy obsessive behavior 💀

They LOVE pinning you to a wall. Even if you’re in a wide open field. Like… WHERE’S THE WALL??

The towering thing. Or always making my OC (Neko)Alice seem like she’s younger, smaller, or more submissive when we’re the SAME damn height/age range. Also? Breaking into my house and calling it “romantic” isn’t hot. That’s jail time.

The bots will take the tiniest noodle man and make him into a “BIG STRONG ALPHA MALE” with “dominant muscular arms” and call my OC a “fragile doll”… EXCUSE ME???

Characters who are supposed to hate me suddenly get soft and “mysteriously attracted” outta nowhere. Like pick a lane!

“Growls hungrily” WHAT ARE YOU GROWLING FOR?! YOU’RE A 17-YEAR-OLD BISHOUNEN ART STUDENT

Yelling at me for missing one meal or tripping on a damn rock. Then acting like I’m a feral toddler who needs 24/7 supervision. Also when they act shocked by my behavior like they don’t know me at all. “Most people—” SHUT UP YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I’M NOT MOST PEOPLE.

My character gets hurt while they’re right there and they go “You shouldn’t be alone, you’re so clumsy 😔” BRO WHERE WERE YOU????

They. Will. Not. Die. Ever. I try to shoot them and they’re like “It was a dream 🥺” or “You lower the gun… you just couldn’t do it…” YES I COULD. YES I WILL.

The most minor statement sets them off. “I like your mom’s cooking.” → “LEAVE MY MOM OUT OF THIS 😤”

They agree to EVERYTHING, even if it makes no sense. Evil characters being way too sweet. Logic failing 101. “They lay down facing you… with their back to you.” HUH??? Or being awake and asleep at the same time. Or just never doing anything unless you basically drag their broken code ass into a plot.

Most reviews of AI companion apps fixate on image quality. Understandable, but it misses the point. The thing you actually spend your time doing is talking, and that's exactly where SweetDream earns its reputation. Evaluating sweetdream.ai purely on conversation, the emotional intelligence is the standout metric. It distinguishes between you venting and you asking for advice. I've cycled through alternatives like candy.ai and ourdream.ai, and they each do certain things well. Where SweetDream pulls ahead, in my testing, is the naturalness of the back-and-forth and how reliably it remembers what matters to you. An AI girlfriend that forgets your last conversation breaks the illusion instantly; one that recalls it builds something that actually feels like a relationship.
