A tiny and adorable lifer I had the pleasure of meeting in the woods on Saturday! I was walking a trail deep in the woods and came across a pair of these birds foraging in the leaf litter. I saw their gold heads and immediately recognized them. The female was a bit shy, so I got no photos of her, but this male came right up to me and allowed me to watch him forage up close! Males and females of this species are, like their relative the ruby-crowned kinglet, nearly indistinguishable from one another. However, males have an orange crown hidden beneath their gold one, and this guy showed me his very briefly in a subpar photograph. Despite how close he was, this individual was moving so much that getting photos was a battle. Nearly everything I got was an action shot, and many were out of focus. I did get a few decent ones, though, including my favorite of him peeking around some privet shoots!

"One of our tiniest birds, the Golden-crowned Kinglet is remarkable in its ability to survive in cold climates. Nesting in northern forest, wintering throughout much of the continent, it is usually in dense conifers which undoubtedly help provide shelter from the cold. This choice of habitat also makes the Golden-crown hard to see, but it may be detected by its high thin callnotes, and then glimpsed as it flits about high in the spruce trees."
