Hello! I figured I'd make a post to elaborate more on (read: ramble about) what this blog is about:
I'm North, a certified animal-liker, hobby wildlife photographer, and iNaturalist addict. This blog is mostly a place for me to share my photography with other people because I take thousands of photos and I may as well let someone other than myself see them! I tend to focus heavily on invertebrates (insects and arachnids specifically) and birds, but I will never pass up the opportunity to photograph any animal, so any kind of wildlife has a chance to make an appearance here. I attempt to post at least daily, though I don't ever queue very far in advance, so that may not always happen!
I like to talk about the things I photograph, so every post I make is going to have some kind of little blurb about what the photo is. I usually try to make them educational, either with facts about the species or identification tips for hard-to-distinguish or commonly mis-IDed animals. Sometimes I can't think of any facts to add, though, so I'll say something about the photography process or how the environment was at the time. I am a yapper, so if you want textless photography, that is not here! If I share pictures, I'm teaching people while I do it!
I try to tag everything in a way that makes it easier to sort for specific kinds of animals. Everything is tagged with the common & scientific name of the lowest classification I can ID the animal to, plus some general tags for broader sorting. For example, a beetle I can ID to species will be tagged with its species' common name, scientific name, a tag labeling what kind of beetle it is (Ex. weevil, longhorn beetle, etc.), a tag just saying "beetle", and larger sorting tags (Ex. insects, invertebrates, animals, etc.). This makes it so anyone who wants to look through photos of specific animals can do so easier!
Everything posted here has already been uploaded on iNaturalist, as I am horribly addicted to it and will never pass up the opportunity to add a new species to my life list. I primarily use iNat and BugGuide to ID my stuff, and I try to be as thorough as possible, but if I make a mistake I'd love to be corrected (with an explanation)!
I occasionally will reblog other nature-related posts. I try to make sure they are either photography or educational, though I'll also reblog iNaturalist-related stuff as well!
Finally, my ask box is always open, and I'd love to hear about/see anything nature or photography related!
Thanks for reading! Have a snake:
