Today in RedQueen AU's that live in my head but will never see the light of day...
A late Republican Roman era alt-history where Regina is the daughter of an elite patrician family and Ruby is a Gallic woman on the run from vengeful devotees of her high priestess mother, whom she killed in the process of saving her friend Snow from being sacrificed to gain favor with the gods in the conflict with the hated Romans.
It would start with Lady Regina visiting her father, one of the legati Caesar's Gallic army, during a winter lull in the campaign against the Gauls. The village they are quartering at would be attacked in the middle of the night because OF COURSE IT IS.
In the confusion, Regina gets separated from her father and his guard, and is forced to flee for her life into the forest. There, she is wounded by an arrow to the shoulder, then cornered by a particularly loathsome pair of barbarians intent on doing nasty barbarian things to her when a most unexpected savior rescues her. During the chaos, sadly, she is rendered unconscious, but not before she catches a glimpse of pale skin and dark hair shimmeringunder the light of the full moon peaking through the canopy of leaves overhead.
When she comes to, Regina is alone, abed in a ramshackle cabin, a warm fire crackling in the tiny stone circle hearth. Her wound has been treated and her arm bound, her soiled clothes replaced by a threadbare tunic the hem of which barely scrapes her knees. She is still running a mild fever and trembling in equal parts due to fear and infection. Someone approaches the door. She grabs for the nearest sharp implement, preparing herself to fight.
But it is only a woman carrying a bundle of firewood, a gorgeous red cloak obscuring her features. When the hood is brushed aside, Regina realizes her rescuer is not just a woman, but an alarmingly beautiful one. An alarmingly beautiful one she immediately recognizes as Gallic. Sure she has only been rescued to turn over to the village chieftain to exact a ransom from her obscenely wealthy, proudly noble parents, she remains on high alert.
The woman, upon noticing Regina awake, goes still. Impossibly tense moments pass before the woman speaks in stilted Latin, explaining that she is not a threat, though she admires Regina's feisty willingness to fight her in spite of her current condition. While Regina does not immediately relax, the woman - whom she refers to as Red due to her uniquely colorful cloak - proves to be kind albeit strict and willful when it comes to her recuperation.
Red, as it turns out, is a bit of a loner who stuck to the foreboding murkiness of the forest to remain secluded. While she is indeed Gallic, she hails from the far northeast, having been driven out of her village for some crime she refuses to name.
For the rest of the evening, the two coexist somewhat peacefully, even if Regina is plotting her escape with every passing second. That night when Red is asleep, she attempts to get away only to stumble outside into bitter cold and freshly fallen snow. Still, she runs as fast and as far as she can. As she nears the edge of the forest, half-delirious and vision blurring from pain, she hears hooves thundering in the distance. But before she can call out for help, her foot catches a fallen trunk, she crashes to the ground, hits her head and slips away into unconsciousness, realizing she has likely condemned herself to death.
For the second time, Regina awakens freshly changed and abed in Red's hovel. A week and a day have passed, and if not for Red's diligent care, she knows she would have died. Unfamiliar guilt over her actions worsens upon learning the rescuers she had been running toward were in fact a band of Gauls scouring the area for locals guilty of conspiring with the hated Roman invaders. That is when Regina learns everyone in the village is dead. Including her father.
Naturally, she falls into despair, and to a degree so acute that she attempts suicide to escape her hopeless situation and would have succeeded had Red not intervened. In the struggle, Regina uncovers a scar across Red's left wrist, which leads to Red explaining her story. They bond over their losses, and soon enough settle into a domestic rhythm that carries beyond Regina's recovery, through the winter, and on into early spring.
As should be obvious, the two fall in love during the intervening months, and may or may not act upon their feelings before they are separated by tragic circumstance.
Sometimes I imagine they escape together, either back to Rome or to a new village that just so happens to be lead by Snow and Charming, where they are happy for a brief time only for them to be torn apart by the war, or racial prejudices, or by Anita's followers catching up with their quarry.
Invariably one of them gets captured and tortured. Usually it's Ruby sad to say. Dunno why I love whumping Ruby, but it is what it is. Whoever gets put through the wringer, there is always a happily ever after, historical conventions or ramifications be damned.
I could go on and on about this, and other ideas I have for RQ, but I'll spare everyone the drivel and bid adieu for now.
I do apologize for this unprompted purging. Maybe getting it out will help me move on? Somehow I doubt it...
