âI came to America in 1981 from Taiwan. My wife and I were young and excited and we knew that even though we didnât have anyone but each other, we would have a great life here. But it wasnât easy. We went to a diner once to have some dinner, but they wouldnât seat us, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. They said they didnât have any open tables. We thought it was because we were Asian, and we probably werenât that far off. So, we opened our own restaurant, a little Asian food place, and our happiest customers are white Americans. It obviously felt bad that they wouldnât seat us at the diner, but at least now we can say that we have the life we came to America to find.â
