boinking heads with @tehcherrya because i couldn't, for the life of me figure out claire's room. also we can't really figure out where william slept for most of these sdfsjhfs and since victor pretty much took most of claire's things, we just got our heads thinking what's left of claire's belongings and her room.
so this is the first shot of claire's room during william and elizabeth's wedding. already we can see that the angel clock survived along with the candleholder on top of the fireplace. the carpet remains the same but the angel that victor took with him is gone, evidently destroyed in the destruction of the tower, replaced instead with two chairs and a small table. which makes it feel more like a leisure place (? idk what yall call it in them days) rather than claire's room or the brothers' bedroom before.
(sorry for the brightness and exposure i can't see shit) and here is the bed and the angel!! which.... you know, victor took. which is our next problem because we all know that victor took that damn bed with him in his flat in edinburgh and then to the tower, which, again, HE BLEW UP.
so we thought this thing over here was the bed just flushed against the wall. and the dresser right next to it, so we also kinda hesitated and was like. is that a folding screen or what. but more importantly, WHERE'S THEIR BED?
we get victor's reflection when he does his sincere non-apology, and whatever is behind him doesn't look like a bed at all, so we're like. WHERE DO THEY SLEEP?
this time, we went frame for frame!! and found out that YES, ACTUALLY, THAT IS A FOLDING SCREEN RIGHT UP AGAINST THE WALL AND THAT IS A DRESSER BESIDE IT. A REALLY BIG DRESSER??? idk but all that says about this now is that claire's room is BARREN and has nothing that shows you that she once lived there, as their mother. or even as someone. so putting all these together, we put two and two together and thought that maybe they only used the room for the wedding, and left it as it is for the duration of it. which means elizabeth and william (or even separately) do not sleep in claire's room, but rather, in some other rooms that we weren't shown in the movie.
tehya also found out where the set location of claire's room was and it turns out it was in the burghley house in lincolnshire which showcases the paintings from roman history like the battle of cannae, mark anthony's death before cleopatra and scipio and a ceiling filled with figures from roman mythology!!
moreover, claire's room had two entrance/exits which could only mean it was primarily a parlor or a drawing room that was purposefully remade into her room instead (might be her request too before the marriage? idk. is that normal??). and it stayed that way after victor and william separate and head to their own cities, what with victor taking her gloves, her bed, the only family portrait (which is only present in the library) and the angel statue. who knows where the rest of her stuff is, it might probably have been buried with her too! for the dresses.... a mystery!
NOW FOR THE TOWER
initially, we thought that william slept.... on the floor or somewhere god knows where in the tower. but the tower supposedly has only one room, right?
again, frame by frame.... i thought that victor's study and his room were in different places. but nope, they're in the same room!
that's his maman's bed, and also the bed that elizabeth slept in when they went overnight..... so that would mean that the couch we see william tuck victor in is the same couch he sat down on when he rejected william's letter from the university
(it's also the same couch near the fireplace in his edinburgh flat)
which is this couch, right? and it looks small, but
same couch!!! and it also got us thinking.... WHERE does william sleep during this time? obviously, he doesn't sleep beside elizabeth. he's a gentleman. he'd take it upon himself to sleep somewhere else..... so i took another look at the room, and
THIS IS THE SAME COUCH. WHICH MEANS THE BROTHERS WERE SLEEPING ON THE COUCHES!!!!!!
SAME COUCH RIGHT BESIDE THE DOOR. SO THAT WOULD MEAN. victor's literally a few feet away from his maman's bed where elizabeth sleeps, which is pretty much how he saw elizabeth slipping out.... or how he notices his favourite bed is empty, and then he follows to listen to elizabeth and the creature talk. which leaves william sleeping by the couch.... as a heavy sleeper too, maybe? since he didn't wake up when young!victor had his "vision" too!!! BUT ITS STILL A FUNNY IMAGE REGARDLESS DFJHDBG
also tehya went ahead and looked for where each of the sets were!! claire's room and the "hallway" (actually a drawing room) where victor leaves after getting slapped by elizabeth is in the burghley house in lincolnshire, while the exterior and stairwell scenes were all shot from Gosford House in Scotland! while young!victor demanding the guards to get out of the room so he can cry is in Wilton House while harlander's set location is in a place called Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, Scotland!! AND the library.... it turns out.... isn't a library... it's the Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire!!
this long-ass thing is just.... notes for myself and tehya but also. yeah they frankenstein-ed THE ENTIRE ESTATE so it's quite difficult to visualise which room goes to which room and how many rooms really are in the estate and if the boys really got their own rooms and they just wanted to sleep in their maman's room.
we still don't know where elizabeth and william sleep in the estate for that duration!!!
