For the fellows out there with a shit ton of academic articles pdf with names made of random numbers, introducing
Zotero and Zotfile
Zotero, which is open source software, will manage the references (that you can add automatically with an ISBN or a DOI or by having zotero recognize the pdf’s metadata), you can also have tags, notes, linked documents, etc.. You can also export the library in Bibtex, making bibliographies formatted as you want (you can even create your own custom citation style if you feel like it), integrate it in libreoffice/MS office, etc.. You can also import an existing bibtex file or database from endnote or mendeley.
Zotfile will allow you to define the name formatting you want for your pdfs and the tree structure you want them to be organised in, and automatically rename and refile your pdfs.
(if you’re the kind of nerd that writes in plain text, zotxt will help integrating zotero in your writing)
If you have a LOT of pdfs you might have to import your library in several times (but this painful moment should only happen once).

Today I feel kind of proud of myself. I have been working on my bachelor’s thesis and even though it feels like it’s not going anywhere, at least I’m doing something. It’s been six months since I last felt like a properly active human being and now I’m slowly but steadily getting where I want to be. So that’s good.
Also, I’m completely in love with Mendeley, that I’m using as my reference manager program. It is AMAZING!
I've been in the market for a new reference manager, and I recently stumbled across the open-source Docear. I've been playing around with it today, and I love how visual it is. This video gives a good overview - although it was designed for academics, by academics, I can totally see it being useful for all sorts of (non-academic) projects.
