1. favorite fic you wrote this year

Cup of Their Deserving wins the prize. I don’t think I’ve ever written such a long fic in such a short amount of time, especially one that’s as emotionally involved. I’m proud of the quality of the writing, I’ve been told that it’s really helped a lot of people who needed it as badly as I did, and I’ve been told by at least one person that it really made them think about slavery, so that’s got to be progress.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

I didn’t start off the year expecting to do most of the things I’ve written. I certainly did not expect to find myself writing either Cup of Their Deserving or Reclamation, and my smaller stuff has been a surprise as well. So - all of them, really! Full of Grace was already started so that hardly counts for this ask, nor does To the Upper Air - which I’d like to remind everyone I updated two days ago. 

19. any new fics to start next year

So many. There’s a sequel to Battle Raven coming, and a prequel as well if I can manage it. Then I have a fic wherein Gates lives through Season 1, and a Whitechapel crossover fic I’d like to do.

There is a version that has Miranda and Thomas on DVD sets?!! (Or DVD sleeve-things.) oh my goddddd

Lawd @ Flint becoming the ironic epitome of the British Empire. Flint-! (I hope this doesn't sound rude, would it be possible to put this behind a cut - I'd love to add this to my likes, but it's a bit long to scroll past daily. It's something I'd really love to come back to for reference!)

The irony is that Flint’s remarkable skillset is owed almost entirely to the British empire. Tactics and strategy, command, warfare, naval skills - it’s all part of the package of a British officer. He’s basically an embodiment of all the reasons why the Birtish Empire was such an overwhelming, effective force at that time.

On a related not, do you know the two times that Flint actually smiles in season 3? 

One is in 3.10 at the camp fire.

“I have survived starvation, a tempest, pirate hunters, jealous captains, mutinous crews, angry lords, a queen, a king, and the goddamn British navy. So to whatever extent you may be concerned that some day we will clash – worried that though today we be friends, some day you would have no choice but to be my end – I wouldn’t worry too much.”

But the other is when he sees Rogers sitting at the beach. It’s an appreciative smile. Because look! There’s someone who might just be a match for him. Finally, a challenge. 

And then again, after Rogers has made his little speech, which Flint gives him credit for. “Clever.” 

!!! Those musings are incredible, good god! The highlight of my recent not-so-quality Black Sails musings were along the lines of 'would Miranda and James actually have found Thomas' wigs attractive?' Ahem. Quality. Needless to say, yes-yes-yes to Miranda/treatise, the Ashbourne estate, which battles James would have been involved in, and any and all other specific musings!

UM NO, those are extremely quality Black Sails musings. You’ve gotta wonder, right.

Adjacent wig-related musings I’ve also had:

1. Thomas’s hair is actually longer than most men would wear it if they were regularly wearing a wig--if the hair underneath is longer than like, a buzzcut, it makes the wig hard to fit and also makes it slide around more. This could lead to hilarity, I’m just saying.

2. That white queued/ponytailed wig is like, decades ahead of its time, though generally it seems like there were shorter queued wigs around in the very early 18th century for travelling and riding. So yes, I could buy that he’d be wearing the queued wig to the docks, but to the dinner with his father or even maybe the salon, he’d definitely be wearing the longer, full-bottomed (their real actual technical name) wig. 

Hell yes re: temper! There’s such an underling sharp edge to Thomas in his scenes, whether he’s passionately talking about something, or just generally irritated or agitated. He’s only a bit more mellow when he’s wooing with Bible verses, gazing fondly at Miranda, or looking wistfully at James. Oh, Thomas!
