When it comes to getting new products during your low waste journey it can be difficult finding the things you need sometimes. Sometimes decisions are more obvious than others, but knowing you have options is helpful.
Avoiding plastic bags at stores is pretty standard for most people who are reducing plastic consumption. It’s easy to make the switch as reusable bags seem to be everywhere these days and they’re very easy to DIY. The biggest challenge is getting into the habit of always keeping your reusables with you to consistently refuse plastic.
Certain stores are easier to shop low waste and plastic free at than others, however whatever you have access to will do. If you can shop bulk or at a refillery do so! Otherwise focus on how things are packages.
Packaging is something that anyone can work on no matter where you get your goods. Finding products in materials that are easily recyclable or preferably package free are what you can focus on. If something you want only comes in plastic opt for a size that is in bulk to reduce extra plastic.
Small businesses and markets are usually very accommodating to people who want to be plastic free. They aren’t intrinsically more eco friendly than corporate businesses, but they are more willing to change their packaging if customers request it.
Second hand anything is always a better option. Nowadays there’s plenty of outlets and platforms to buy things used in person and on the internet to make it more accessible. If you must buy new no matter where you buy it take the best care of it to prolong it’s life. Not everyone can afford or attain the more eco friendly option. If you’re making the effort however to keep it out of landfill for as long as possible you’re still doing great!
Even if you can't do everything making whatever swaps you can is an improvement! As always don’t forget to use what you have before you start shopping for new products!
