I cleaned up my test pressing of Talking Heads’ genre-busting classic Fear Of Music this weekend. I don’t play it often for obvious reasons (I actually have a regular first pressing that I typically put on instead), but I wanted to enjoy it, pulled it out and yeah, it was kind of dirty—so I fixed that. On the upper left, you can see the grubby LP; to its right, I went at it with a Hunt brush, which did 70-80% of the work, getting dust out of the grooves, as you can see. Next, it took a bath in a HumminGuru ultrasonic record cleaning machine with a touch of Groovewasher G2 fluid in it, and Bam—you can see the decided improvement on the lower right. The record sounded amazing, particularly on (of all tracks) “Paper”—the ricocheting guitar echos were electrifying and Chris Frantz’s drums were right in the room. Totally worth the effort to clean this one up; it now is in a MoFi sleeve to keep it that way.

I’m doing the unthinkable and actually selling off a few records on eBay, so I spent yesterday afternoon cleaning them in a HumminGuru ultrasonic record cleaning machine. The machine is one of the few times I’ve ever backed a Kickstarter campaign and since it arrived a month ago, it has been in steady use. It certainly tidied up this rare instrumental version of Guru’s classic Jazzmatazz Volume 1, featuring Donald Byrd, Branford Marsalis, Courtney Pine, Lonny Liston Smith and others. How could I give up such a classic? Er, I had two copies, believe it or not. You can only listen to one at a time, however, so it dawned on me that I should sell it and let someone else enjoy these tracks, too.

Picked up some great cheap garage sale vinyl yesterday but it was grubby! So here’s a before-and-after of Rush’s “Hemispheres.” I ran it through my VPI record cleaner. Now it sounds and looks nice and sparkling clean.

Some record cleaning machine fun today. Ok, cleaning records is actually pretty boring, but you can see what a difference it makes. This is The Rolling Stones “Shelley Pressing” of Hot Rocks I found a few weeks ago, and now all the dust, mold and general grime is gone. Love my used VPI machine.
