hello ! so, i've been interested in smoke cleansing for a while and made my first stick today, and i've looked up recaning but i literally cannot find a single thing about that word anywhere, which makes me confused. do you have any works on that or smth? thanks in advance !
I do have a few posts on the subject in my archives.
It’s not likely that you’ll find “recaning” mentioned in most pagan literature, largely because the word has yet to make its’ way into common usage for most of the community. Add to this the fact that most of the pagan books you see in chain bookstores are from the same ten or twelve authors who largely got their education (and therefore their terminology) from texts which were popular in the 1980s-2000s, and you get a whole lot of books that talk about “smudging” (which is largely passe for modern witches) or smoke-cleansing (which is the same as recaning).
The term recaning is Anglo-Saxon and its’ usage and popularity can be traced to the online pagan community. It got its’ start from discussions among witches looking for alternative terms for “smudging,” which has culturally appropriative connotations thanks to certain New Age authors (we all know who).
Smoke-cleansing is the general term for the process of burning herbs for banishing or protective purposes, but it’s a bit of a mouthful. A few people suggested “recaning” or “censing” as shorter, easier words to describe the same process without the insinuation of ignorance (or at least insensitivity) that “smudging” can carry.
There’s also an article on the subject in one of my books, Grovedaughter Witchery.
