R.I.P. BB King, great blues guitarist.
I have actually worked with BB king once, it was the Spring of 1997, Oceanway Recording. I was working on the never-ending album ‘Bridges to Babylon’ by The Rolling Stones as an assistant engineer. Lots of people came by, either to hang out, or play, so it seemed. I had seen the Heartbreakers, and Dan Akroyd too. One night, Mr. BB King showed up out of the blue. We stopped what we were working on, and rearranged to get setup. We set him up on a rug near the piano, headphones, table, drink, amp. I was the one setting it up, and as we were just settling, he says to me, with the biggest grin ever “Well where is Lucille?”. I quickly went over to where the guitar techs did their work in the ISO room, Pierre had just finished tuning, he carefully handed it to me, and I carried Lucille like it was a newborn baby back over to BB and handed it over. Seconds later we are rolling tape, I am behind the glass, and was treated to some of the best blues I have ever heard, BB King jamming out with The Rolling Stones. As far as I know, that material was never released.
RIP BB King, you were always a highlight in my life.
