she had offered to stay the night again the following day, even going as far to say “i know he’s doing better but just incase he falls ill again, i wanna be there to help.” and matt quickly shut it down by saying “no. it’s not your place to help and i don’t need you acting like a girlfriend, last night already made shit weird.”
when matt had texted her saying not come over, she felt the need to check on him, and so in true darlin fashion, she ignored matt’s warning and showed up anyway. and after a few hours of sitting in tense silence while rubbing his back as matt quietly stressed and stewed over the argument, she offered to listen to him vent if needed and he scoffed as he slid away from her and told her to roll a joint. she refused to keep pressing the matter knowing it would only end with matt getting upset and she didn’t want that to happen.
when darlin heard the news of their grandfather’s passing from chris, darlin immediately went to matt’s room. and as soon as she stepped into it, he looked at her with cold eyes and a sharp voice and said “if you’re not here to get me drunk high, or fuck, you turn around and get the fuck out.” and she scoffed and sat beside him and told him she’s not letting him lose himself to grief that way, and the second she sat there, he broke down. but after a few hours, he looked at her and told her to leave, and she respected his wishes but still checked on him from time to time.
out of the two of them, darlin has more appreciation for the small and few moments of vulnerability they share than she lets on. despite knowing that he’s allowed to be vulnerable and show emotions, she sometimes stops him from doing so because it wrecks the version of him where he’s just around for sex and he’s emotionally avoidant and unattached that she keeps in her mind, so those moments humanize him and they bring her back to reality, something she often tries to stop. and that’s her toxic trait, she tries to control everything and refuses to let things slip away from her carefully curated fantasies. darlin needs a reality check quite often and matt has no problem delivering it.
does matt have any soft or vulnerable moments that only darlin has witnessed?
yes.
when mr whiskers, matt’s cat, got sick due to a lack of proper nutrition because matt wasn’t aware the food he was feeding him wasn’t good for him, he was extremely paranoid, panicky, and unable to sleep. darlin had shown up one night, under the pretence of wanting to sleep with him, but in reality she knew something was wrong. she sat with him through his panic attacks throughout the night, tried her best to console him until he was able to see the vet in the morning.
matt had gotten in a serious fight with his father during the early stages of his situation with darlin, and she again had shown up late at night and comforted him while he worried himself sick.
when matt lost his grandfather, who he was close with, he tried losing himself in sex, weed, and alcohol, but darlin didn’t let him.
despite secretly cherishing these rare moments of vulnerability, they don’t speak about them, they don’t remind each other of them, and they don’t make it a common theme in their “relationship” or lack thereof.

he has her location, whether he’s supposed to or not, due to a bad party experience and he was the only sober one in the groupchat at the time. there was also another time where she was stranded by somebody and he had to come get her [ fic abt this scenario coming soon! ] so he’ll use it to “keep tabs” on her when they’re not messing around, but it’s more in the sense of what parties or clubs/bars he either needs to show up to get her to come home with him again, or to know what parties, clubs, and bars to avoid when he’s the one that called things off.
he also has a rather subconscious tendency to bring her water and taste test her drinks when they’re out at bars or clubs together, and she finds it endearing but also side eyes the ever loving fuck out of him because she once said “it’s giving overprotective boyfriend.” and he blocked her for a week.
what darlin’ texts one of her friends about matt
oh absolutely and all her friends are lowkey over the darlin and matt bullshit but they also see right through it, because they darlin isn’t the type to let a man or woman get under her skin the way matt does. which means, they see it for what it actually is, two people scared of being vulnerable finding a way to be vulnerable without it being in the emotional sense. they see that matt and darlin do care about each a lot deeper than they let on, but her friends also know she won’t ever admit it.
