Got reminded by a post somewhere about this book by Roger Selazny and hey, today's the day.
My local used book store happened to have one copy in good condition, if only I believed in fate...
Now, I both haven't read this book before, and know how it goes. I was introduced to it... last year I believe, by Strange Studies of Strange Stories. Still, I think the experience of reading it one day at a time will produce a nice effect. After all the Leaves are falling...
SO!
We open with a intro to our narrator, Snuff, who is a dog. What kind of dog we don't know, all we do know is that he's a watchdog, male, and has presumably intimidating teeth.
Also, his master is certainly Jack the Ripper. He lives outside foggy London, has a big knife, is named Jack. It's not meant to be a surprise. More we're wondering what he's doing, and what part Snuff plays in it.
After all, Jack is presumably a violent murderer (who also digs up bodies in chapter 1) but snuff is a dog, and therefore a good boyo.
The other thing of note in Chapter 1 is that Jack doesn't just have his knife, he also has several presumably magic and presumably unpleasant beasties trapped in his house. In closets, in magic circles, in boxes.
Snuff says they're the Keepers of these curses, but we don't know exactly what that means yet (well I do, but I'm pretending)
and that's it for day 1. I do wonder how long the chapters will average because day 1 is pretty darn short, given the length of the book though, others will presumably be quite a lot longer.
We get a bit of Halloween flair, with the fog and the graveyards, but all filtered through Snuff's doggy vision. All tease so far
Let's see day 2
Should also mention that my copy has illustrations, those should be fun

Question: should I do a read through thread or is there a better format?
Thought I might as well make a place for any thoughts I have to not spam stuff too much idk. Probably would post a lot of Marcille, Falin, and Farcille stuff and thoughts about comparing the manga to the anime. Any format suggestions?
Format
Reblog per chapter
New Post per chapter
side blog for any kind of read through or such (I don't expect much but idk)
post whenever there's a random thought
other ideas (reply with them pls)

I'll probably make some drafts of stuff in the meantime if anything comes to me.
Also let me know what unique tag I should use so people can filter me out if preferred.
Before I have to give it back to the person I loaned it from. To many I’m sure that feels like forever, but I suffer from lack of motivation to do things I enjoy and a race against the clock to do math. I’m on page 60-something and what I thought was going to be an obvious lukewarm adventure is turning G A Y, very quickly indeed.
(see below an excerpt that describes me about every woman ever)
The person who lent me this copy also has some riveting commentary to spare. While I was flipping through, trying to get some idea about the emotional rollercoasters of this book (I fear change), I came across some choice ones, but the only one that my rat brain thought to photograph was the following (spoiler alert?)
So yeah. This is a shitpost to its core, but I needed to get it out there in order to have motivation to actually finish the book. if anyone wants my actual thoughts, I’d be more than happy to give them, as long as everyone remembers that my opinions are unequivocally correct. If nobody wants my actual thoughts, I’ll still post them because… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is a somewhat stream-of-consciousness readthrough of Hiria: the Eternal City by Peter Eijk (https://jimmyshelter.itch.io/hiria). I backed this game during Zine Month 2023 and received the completed game earlier this week.
First up, the cover.
Absolutely gorgeous work by Jean Verne. Buildings of different historical eras represented in several different art styles and colors all smashed together really conveys the idea of a confusing but fantastical cityscape, and the black and white outline of a person looking at all of it very effectively communicates your position as the reader/player: an outsider, looking in on something that doesn't make sense but is utterly captivating.
Just flipping through the book really highlights just how good the art is. The team of artists (bertdrawsstuff, Jean Vern, molomoot, and Phil Jensen) really bring a variety of styles to the game that echo the styles mashed up in each of their work. My only real complaint here is that the quality and size of the art kind of highlights its absence in the rest of the game. The layout was done by the author but it is inspired by Clayton Notestine's Classic Explorer Template (something that I could tell even before I went back to the credits page to double check on this), and the overall effect is one that feels a little too spare for its own good. I'll circle back around to this later
