Shanna Swendon has created a masterpiece in this book, at least in my opinion. This book is a explores and alternative world where America did not win the Revolution. Technology is different, as is the social structure, industry, and people. The story starts with a bang in the year 1888 as 16 year-old Verity Newton is traveling New York to secure a job as a governess to a wealthy family. On the way there, she encounters bandits that are stealing from from the crown. She has a small encounter with who seems to be the lead bandit and he leaves quite an impression. That swoon worthy type. As she makes her way in this new city, she secures a job, helps the rebel cause, falls for a charming young rebel mechanic, tries to keep her charges in line and safe, wonders at her employer’s mysterious comings and goings, all while keep a secret, that can literally cost her everything maybe even her life.
