Gideon the Ninth has been on my TBR for ages, because I heard really good things about this book. I just started and I feel like I may be too old for it.
It's an easy read tho, so I'll give it a try anyway.
Previous anon! Sorry not explaining well, but it's the embargo that was placed on Cuba. People without electricity or fuel still!
Oh, I see.
Honestly—all I can really say is that that’s awful.
Situations like these require a careful hand and understanding of politics when approaching them as a subject that I do not have at the moment.
I’m sorry, I know that’s probably disappointing to hear, but I really am not the person to go to about things like this.
Thank you for stopping by, anon, and making me—and therefore all of my followers—aware of the situation. Please have a good day, or night.
Day 5: Losing Interest (61%)
Until the end of chapter 34
I’m starting to lose interest at an alarming rate. I don’t think this story is right for me. I literally don’t care about any of this. The romance seems so forced and fake. I hate that Wren, Synové, and Kazi were reduced to romance-obsessed girls instead of the soldiers we were promised they were. We have barely even seen them fight at this point, even though there are a lot of mentions of how strong they are.

Day 3: Writing Style (45%)
Until the end of chapter 25
Writing and POV
I have a feeling Jase’s POV chapters are useless. Most of the story happens from Kazi’s POV anyway, and the story would have made more of an impact seeing everything from her perspective and getting introduced to the events as she finds them out. I also found a lot of instances where I thought like there was more “telling” than “showing”. I wasn’t a fan of that, but I appreciated the experimentation with the different storytelling style.
Romance (again)
The romance is also forced, and the notion that she “isn’t like other girls” was annoying. On the other hand, it makes sense for them to catch feelings for each other, considering they spent days chained together with no one else in sight. What doesn’t make sense is their feelings sticking after returning home.
And I can’t get over the fact that Kazi (after we have already established that she is smart, strong, and a soldier) believed Jase when he told her there was a Vendan settlement nearby when they were chained. But I guess it didn’t really matter whether she believed him or not because it was the closest settlement to them.

Day 2: Romance (30%)
Until the end of chapter 19
I don’t like romance.
Maybe it is because of how repetitive the scenes and lines are. This section of the story reaffirmed that belief. It’s almost always the same plot with only a handful of differences. I have to say that them being chained together was a nice twist, but them falling in love with one another just because of proximity and that they see each other every day, I don’t think I like that.
I’m starting to think I should stop reading romance altogether.
I also noticed that instead of characters telling us of each other’s reactions, we have two POVs, one for the actual scene and the other for the second character’s thoughts about said scenes.
One of the things I like is the writing style. It sometimes feels like reading a poem.

Chapter 001 ✧˖°.
✧ | I appreciate the unique animals. They are realistic but slightly off. Sorta like the Pegasus.
✧ | QIFREY MENTION (he’s so pretty I hate him).
✧ | Very detailed backgrounds; notice the cross hatching and use of foreground, middle ground, background. This is amplified by the grey tones/black shading.
✧ | Little Coco is still very adorable. Must be protected.
✧ | Those three ladies are really rude. Like leave my man alone, he’s trying to help. I know you’re stranded but maaaaan.
✧ | Lots of different facial expressions. Especially from Coco, she’s quite expressive.
✧ | I can feel the bond between Coco and her Mom. Shame her mom went out like that, rest in peace Queen.
