Trying to bring comfort about the day with some penny dreadfuls.
still feeling kind of shitty and exhausted - couldn’t sleep last night & then slept until around 6pm today, on and off - but i have felt vaguely more human and have been reading the julian lynes/ned mathey books, aka Death by Silver and A Death in the Dionysus Club by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold
they’re queer historical mystery fantasy romance novels, which sounds like there’s a lot going on... and there is, but in a good way. very quick & enjoyable to read. with more fraught relationship negotiation and stuff and more of a slow-burn than i usually find in romance novels, and the prose is more like mystery prose than romance prose (which sounds nonsense but i swear makes sense in my head). both of these points are very good for me. anyway i like them a lot - they combine a lot of the stuff from each genre that i enjoy while avoiding a lot of the pitfalls or at least the aspects that i don’t enjoy. you’re not going to find startling historical insights or anything - the historical stuff is not super deep, although not particularly jarring or superficial for the most part. but if you want a nice fantasy-mystery series with a good slow romance, and lots of emotions, i recommend them.
oh also as a CW, the first of the two books goes into a fair amount of detail about boarding school bullying and abuse.
“I called my father,” he said, his voice muffled by the material of the sweatshirt I wore. “Told him that if he didn’t want his friends knowing all about his gay son who was sleeping with a werewolf, he needed to release my trust to me today. In four hours, we’ll have money to throw at the problem.” - Kyle
