I downloaded the Galatea app, and it's frustrating to unlock chapters. On the bright side, I can tell the quality is a lot better than on the Readict app. You can also browse by keyword, stacking multiple phrases.
Brief review: I will stick around to finish at least one story. "Test Subject" was very good, even though they hadn't gotten to the spicy stuff yet.
Longer review under the cut. Basically, I'm frustrated and not going to keep browsing for more stories.
Biggest frustration is about how to unlock chapters. I can read 5 chapters and then hit a 6-hour cool-down period. I can start other stories while I wait, but they have the same cool-down barrier.
I didn't see repeatable ways to earn points. Things like downloading other apps, following social media, and writing an app store review were one-time tasks. It was 10 points to unlock a chapter, and I earned 21 by setting up my account and verifying my email.
Maybe I couldn't find it, but there didn't seem to be a way to unlock chapters by watching ads. And after this cool-down period, how many chapters will be unlocked? Is it 6 hours per chapter? It'll take me forever to read this dang thing.
In contrast, Readict allows for ads to unlock most things, along with earning points. I can easily earn at least one free chapter with the daily tasks. Doing the reading challenges can net even more, but you still have to unlock other chapters with ads to accomplish this. Points also expire within 3-7 days.
As I've said, though, the quality is hit or miss. Lots of typos, convoluted plots, things that were translated poorly. I read one where they couldn't keep the heroine's name consistent. Another, otherwise of good quality, had editing notes from their beta reader left in. Some stories will repeat a paragraph or scene or chapter. Common amateur mistakes, but they get annoying when certain plots aren't compelling.

So what shall I do? Galatea will be a less-used treat, as unlocking chapters seems to be a pain. Readict has gotten better with some new stories, so that will still be my main place to read for now.
I've heard ao3 has original fiction, so I've considered browsing there. I don't have an account, so that may limit me. (Need to follow up on some ST fanfic there, now that the author isn't sharing it on Tumblr.)
I know I should hit up Project Gutenberg to read classics, but I need romance and smut currently. I don't have the budget for Amazon ebooks, and I don't want to have that on my phone just yet.

I've been reading smut and romance stories to distract from the dread of the world, and today's read had the diamond detail I've been aching for. I cackled and kicked my legs. I almost passed out from glee. Like, seriously, literally got lightheaded for a bit, even though I was already laying down.
Granted, the characters are still in the discussing-logistics phase. But one dude is confirmed bi, he's been flirting with another male character (who's flirting back), and the heroine has "be a voyeur" on her bucket list (and similar things).
I have trapped myself on this cishet hell of an app (Readict) because I'm too lazy to search for something better. Now it's finally paying off.
To think I started my day reading a story in which the author couldn't keep the name of the main character consistent!
I don't openly talk about sex etc as much as I used to, years ago, because I have a different group of followers and mutuals. I've considered having a side blog as an outlet, but I don't have enough energy lately. Encourage or discourage as you will.
I can't believe "Doctor Vagina's Son" got taken down. I only got through 4 chapters of the first one, so I'm wondering what was so horrible that they pulled it. (The original is still up.)
I finished one of the stories I wanted to read before I leave the Readict app. I'm still curious about that dragon story's mystery, but I'm not very compelled lately. I've been getting ads for the app again, though. It's clearly an app fueled by werewolf stuff, but not all of it is quality.
I've mentioned before that Readict is an app with web novels that tend to be... of poor quality. I lol'ed with a friend about Doctor Vagina a few weeks ago. Now there's a sequel.
Curiosity killed me, so I started reading the first one. The malpractice was already written in the summary, but the poor hygiene practices are just as bad. (Things might not be so terrible if he wore a condom.)
Typos also appeared early, as expected. There are like 90+ short chapters to this, and I barely made it through 4. Worst part was that the app wouldn't let me take screenshots of the text. At least then I could show my friends the brainrot I willingly exposed myself to.
I really should delete this app. Or at least finish up the 2 stories that were somewhat compelling. I miss that alien series by Nancy Cummings. *pout*

Snow kept the library closed today. Just as well; I've been in a bit of a mental funk. It's like the usual-february-stuff is early. It's been sneaking in since just before Christmas, tbh. I don't think I'm ready to acknowledge it right now, not just that I'm holding off til Feb.
Been reading some good stuff on the Readict app. There's a few authors I really like, so I'm going through their titles. On the other hand, there's just so many more titles I briefly look at and then dismiss, because they irk me. It's either the narrative style (often it's badly-done first-person) or characters that are too young (eg teenagers, or at least not old enough to drink). If I read high school scenes, it should be flashbacks.
Reading these alien romances (shush, don't judge) gets me thinking about different senses, getting to know a new partner through touch. I'm considering this while thinking about how to describe things in my own narratives - what catches my interest in a long blurb of description. Eh, just a topic of note; no significant thoughts yet.
