I went into the season with reasonable expectations. I didn't expect things to be roses or sunshine. But I expected to leave season 4 with a sense of hope. I made the mistake of reading a message site and now I have lost all enjoyment. I don't even know what will happen to Sam/Andy but it seems season 4 is hopeless.
Oh no, don’t drop off from Rookie Blue! Yeah, many social media platforms have fans who are upset, frustrated, and being negative right now. Lots of people with different opinions and some are louder than others. I do tend to be more positive about it, though am wondering whyyyy the writers are doing some things on RB this season—but I do believe everything is an important piece to the story of Sam/Andy AND this show is more than just one couple. However, no matter how much negativity and disappointment I read from other fans, I’ve lately been brushing it off and ignoring most of it because it’s turning into a broken record. No show is entirely negative or entirely positive, they’re more in the middle road and many times things end up better than expected! Everyone has different interpretations and how they watch shows (it’s why I like to read varying opinions). I like the angst and relationship complications that TV dramas bring. I also like to use my imagination and I like to character-study shows I’m really into (like RB).
I’m going to pull some things that I posted on Two Worlds Collide (the main Sam/Andy board) that I still stand by:
I honestly do NOT think that Sam and Andy will be happy happy at the end of this season, but they will be leaning towards a better place, or more so, realize how important they are in each other’s lives and how much in love they still are. And, god-willing, S5 will be S/A in love and trying to make their relationship work again because of their S4 growth!
I don’t think that they can make things worse than what we saw last season (hopefully) and they ARE the central relationship, “the umbrella of other relationships.” Andy is the protagonist and Sam is and has always been (and always will be) the most important person in her life. How can they go back to being just friends and co-workers when they obviously love each other and want to be together. They’re just unsure of whether they can work out right now, they don’t have the right tools to fix “them”. Sometimes love is NOT enough. This season will hopefully prove that they are growing up and will be better people for each other i.e. open those communication lines because they WANT to work out as a couple.
The first two episodes showed me that they are on the same page, but are terrified of their feelings beneath the surface and of getting their hearts ripped out and mashed up to pieces (cuz really, who else could break them, but each other?).
It’s important that they figure out what they want making their own decisions and learn from their mistakes.
I think Sam has lots of problems with communication when it’s not about work. Relationships are full of feelings which are messy and make life complicated (to him). He doesn’t like that Andy gets him riled up and twisted inside (even though he’s madly in love with her). It’s why he’s taking the simpleness of Marlo right now—it’s what he’s used to (his default position) before Andy came into his life. I’m sure he’ll get to the point this season where it’s not fulfilling enough for him, that he craves all the feelings he has for Andy (and maybe he wants to figure them out with her, he’ll open up little by little).
And watching a show as it airs can be rough (especially with 8-9 months of waiting for it to come back!). Then when RB does, we get 13 episodes and people are antsy for Sam/Andy to be a couple again (and the world of fanfic creeps in for some people and they want things done like that—which, what about the RB writers and their vision?). It makes people extremely frustrated and it can be hard to “keep the faith.” I get it—at least, I read it and try to understand, but I HAVE to watch everything played out and make my own judgments with my own eyes, ears, and thoughts. I think that is the key thing: to hold judgment til you see it and stick with your gut reactions to promos or cast/writer comments.
Season 4 will be a journey and many things can happen across 13 episodes, good and bad. It’s good thing that you are realistic about how the season may end (me too). Take whatever you read from other people with a grain of salt because it’s their interpretation (and who knows why they think the way they do). It’s easy to get sucked into negative posts, but there are also positive posts that are insightful! :D
