Okay, this is more modern au red beauty because why not. I can do what I want. hereâs 550+ words of red beauty meeting in a bar and ruby being an absolute boss and taking care of a drunk belle.
Ruby hates her friends. Actually, she doesnât hate them, they just annoy her because theyâre all couples, or in the case of Killian and Emma almost-couples who wonât admit their couple. It makes going out suck because naturally they all pair off to make out or whatever while leaving her alone at the bar.
Sheâs only three drinks in and everyone is already doing their couple-y thing. David and Mary-Margaret over by the billiards tables and doing more flirting than playing pool. Robin is pretty much pretending to teach Regina how to throw darts even though Regina totally whipped them all at it last week. Meanwhile Ruby has a sneaking suspicion that Killian and Emma are making out in the handicapped bathroom.
Sheâs about to order another cranberry vodka when thereâs a loud crash. She turns to see a small brunette wobbling on the bar stool, a smashed cocktail glass at her feet.
âBartenderâŚBartenderâŚâ The woman erratically waves a finger in the air. Her teetering becomes more precarious and without thinking Ruby wraps an arm around her shoulder to stabilize her.
The woman jumps at the contact and she moves to punch her. Itâs a sloppy swing and Ruby immediately dodges it.
âHeyâŚheyâŚheyâŚitâs okay. Iâm not gonna hurt you. Youâre okay.â
The brunette looks at her bewildered, her big blue eyes unfocused and hazy with alcohol.
âYouâre not R-ru-umbleâŚâ
Ruby blinks. âNo. Iâm not.â
âI donât feel so goodâŚâ she slurs and puts her hand to her mouth. Recognizing all the signs of a drunken vomit session, Ruby immediately helps her off the bar stool and guides her towards the bathroom.
âBitches clear out!â She barks at the bar flies doing their make-up at the sinks before kicking open a stall.
The brunette immediately crumbles onto her knees and starts violently vomiting. The woman at the sinks make disgusted noises and squawk their indignation and judgment. Ruby glares at them, daring them to say more before crouching down next to the woman. She pulls the womanâs hair back while gently rubbing circles into her back. She whimpers in response and leans her head against the toilet seat.
âI canât believe I threw up,â she croaks.
âYou had a lot to drink,â Ruby replies in a soothing voice. âYou okay, honey?â
âNoâŚI hate everythingâŚmy exâŚmy jobâŚmy headâŚmeâŚâ
âItâs okayâŚyouâre okayâŚâ
âNot when everything is spinningâŚâ
âYou got a name, sweetheart?â
âItâs LaceyâŚno, no, no, no. Itâs not Lacey, thatâs what I say to creepy guys and youâre not a creepy guy,â she responds, lifting her head up from the toilet to look at Ruby. A bright smile across her face and itâs breathtaking in a way no one elseâs smile has been before. âYouâre beautiful. Like an angel. â
Ruby cannot help it, she laughs. âThank you, but Iâm no angel.â
âYou seem pretty angelic to me, nothing is spinning  when I look at you.â she replies, leaning forward a little too close into Rubyâs personal space. She giggles drunkenly. âWhat a big brown eyes you have.â
âThe better to see you with, my dear,â she replies, unable to help the pun.
âYou the big bad wolf?â
âSome would say so,â Ruby canât help herself from flirting, even if itâs with a drunk girl. âBut most people call me Ruby.â
âRubym like a gem,â she says. âIâm Belle.âÂ
She smiles brightly at her again before bowing her head again in order to upchuck so more. Ruby sighs but continues to hold her hair back.
The things she does for pretty girls.

D (@sometimesangryblackwoman) suggested I try a drabble to unlock my brain a bit so I can get my dissertation to work. I canât stick to a drabble word count to save my life, but this is the un-betaâd mess I came up with.
Henry is an accident prone child. Regina spends half her life chasing after him before he can knock into something valuable, or trip down the stairs, or fling himself from the top of the playground castle from the moment he starts to crawl. And it doesnât matter how baby-proofed her house is (she over compensates a little) because her little boy is fearless.
He is fearless and so confident in his motherâs ability to catch him before he hits the ground that even the few times he ends up with grazed knees only stalls him for a few seconds. Long enough for Regina to kiss it better, dust him off and ask him if heâs hurt before heâs blinking away barely-there-tears and grinning back at her with an Iâm okay, mommy! before heâs tearing off again for another adventure. As much as it terrifies her, the idea of her little prince getting hurt sends ice through her veins, she grits her teeth and assures him that yes, honey, of course Iâm watching every time he gets the swing just a little higher than earlier. Because she never wants him to feel like he needs to be scared of anything, never wants him to think she wonât be there to catch him. Or at least help him up if she doesnât reach him in time.
Henry breaks his arm when heâs four.Â
A pipe bursts under Main Street, ruins the road and floods some of the buildings, and sheâs been stuck dealing with the fallout with Graham, and by the time she gets homeâbarely remembering to thank Ruby as she leavesâRegina is exhausted. Sheâs been out since the early, early, hours of the morning and all she wants to do is sleep. But she has a toddler who is hyperactive at the best of times, and itâs not quite his bedtime yet. Though she tells herself to send Ruby flowers, or candy, or wine because the girl has him bathed and in his pjs already while he sitsâfidgetsâon the couch with his teddy, Hercules playing on the TV, and a sippy cup of milk.
She misjudges how long she can get away with changing out of her grimy clothes. She locks the door behind Ruby, kicks her shoes out of the way, dumps her purse and coat by the hallway table and moves to say hello to her boy. Heâs so transfixed by the cartoon, bouncing away to the music, that he barely notices the change from his favourite babysitter to his mother. But he nods and mumbles an acknowledgement when she presses a kiss to his hair and tells him that mommy is just going to have a quick shower and sheâll be right back. The movie is only at the point of Hercules going to the Temple of Zeus, so she figures she has at least twenty minutes to clean herself up a bit and throw on her own pyjamas before he wonders where she is.
Sheâs wrong.
Itâs only been ten minutesâshe is pro at five minute or less showers nowâwhen she comes out of her room in time to hear a thud and a sharp cry that stops her heart. Sheâs stumbling down the stairs before Henryâs cries really have time to start, but her pulse is still racing at the sight of the love of her life in a tearful, crumpled heap of fleece footie-pyjamas, a crooked coffee table, and mussed up couch cushions.
âMommy,â he whines, tears spilling over his red cheeks, when he sees her all but skid into the living room.
Dropping to her knees in front of him Regina tries not to let on just how panicked she is, lest she upset him more. âYouâre okay, baby,â she soothes. âMommyâs here.â
The underside of his chin is red, and it looks like it may well bruise in time, but other than that she canât really tell whatâs wrong. Henryâs crying now, little pained whimpers that have her scooping him up and sitting on the couch with him curled into her lap. She strokes one hand through his hair while she rocks him, tells him itâs going to be okay and that sheâs got him now all while pressing kisses to his hairline.
She has no idea what he was doing, but when he whimpers that it hurts, mommy she decides to figure that part out later.
âWhat hurts, honey?â When he just sniffles and turns his face into her chest she presses on, âHenry, I need to know what hurts, sweetheart, so that mommy can fix it.â He doesnât answer but heâs cradling his left wrist to his stomach. âHenry⌠will you let mommy look at your arm?â
âIt hurts,â he cries, shaking his head a little bit and pressing closer to her.
âI know,â she says. âI know it hurts, darling, I just need to see how badly youâre hurt. Otherwise I canât help you feel better.â
It takes her a few minutes but eventually Henry agrees to let her see his arm, rests it in her hand, his hitching breaths making his tiny body lurch against her a she mumers nonsense to him in an effort to help calm him down. He tearfully asks her to kiss it better, like sheâs done to every other bump, graze, and bruise heâs ever had in his short life, so she does. Even though she has an inkling that it wonât distract him from the pain, she presses a kiss to the mark on his jaw before brushing a kiss to his arm, feather light lest she hurt him, as she holds it steady on his lap.
Itâs warm. Daniel told her once after she had a pretty bad fall from Rocinante when they were teenagers that if itâs broken, the area around a bone will feel hotter than normalâa healer had told him it was the blood rushing to the wound to try and heal it. But Henryâs so worked up that every part of him is radiating heat.
âBaby, can you move your fingers for me?â
âBut it hurts, mommy.â
âI know, I know it hurts,â she says and presses another kiss to his temple. âBut do you think you can try? For me?â
Henry whines, but he nods against her shoulder and looks down to where his wrist is laying over his lap. She can feel him getting frustrated when they barely twitch so she tells him that heâs being so brave for her, and that he can stop nowâsheâs seen enough.
Standing up, mindful of moving in a way that wonât jolt him, Regina situates Henry on her hip, shuts the TV off with the remotes, and moves towards the kitchen to dig an ice pack out of the back of their freezer. She helps him hold it to his arm, hushing him when he squirms before carrying him upstairs to add a few more layers to each of them, shoving slippers onto Henryâs feet and stuffing her own into the one pair of Ugg boots that she owns for wearing around the house when itâs cold.
They get home from the ER three hours later, Henry now sporting a bright green cast and a sticker that congratulates him on being brave, courtesy of one of the nurses on shift. His eyes are droopy from the painkillers heâd been given and when heâd asked her on the drive back home if he could sleep with her tonight she hadnât even thought about saying anything but yes.
Regina manages to lock the front door without putting a still upset and clingy Henry down, though it takes some maneuvering to do so, before she makes her way up the stairsâthey can leave their jackets and extra layers in her room for tonight, itâll be easier than taking their outerwear off down here when Henry is so reluctant to let go of her. Not that sheâs overly eager to put him down just yet either.
Heâs half asleep by the time she deposits him onto her bed, stirring just enough to help her awkwardly remove his jacket and slippers before dropping right back into his Tylenol induced trance. She shifts him further into the middle of the bed before shucking her own layers and quickly brushing her teeth, leaving the light in her ensuite on with the door half closed when she pads back to her room.
Henry mumbles a little as she gets them both under the covers, cuddles into her with his neon-green cast resting between them as she whispers goodnight and drops a kiss to his forehead, but they both drift off to sleep within minutes, far too exhausted from their evening to do much else.
Regina wakes up without her alarm, or phone ringing to pull her from the dreamworld. Instead thereâs a warmth, and sunlight creeping through her not-quite-closed curtains, and a tiny finger tracing over her nose, lips and cheek to entice her back to the land of the living. Henry is awake and blinking at her while the fingers of his non-damaged hand.
Regina scrunches her nose, smiling when he giggles, before she greets him with a sleep rough good morning, honey. But instead of answering Henry frowns. Before she can ask whatâs wrong, if his arm is hurting (heâs definitely due for some more painkillers) his fingers trace back and forth over the skin just above her lip.
It takes him asking, âDid this hurt, mommy?â for her to realise that heâs transfixed with her scar. She bites at the inside of her cheekâsomething her mother had always reprimanded her for as a childâas she tries to think of how to answer.
âYes,â she tells him. Because it did hurt. But she wonât ever tell him how much. Or that she had more cuts than just that one, it was just too deep for Mother to heal.
Henryâs own frown deepens. âDid your mommy not kiss it better?â The idea of a parent not being able to kiss it better so very foreign to him.
Her heart aches a little at that, because no, Cora never kissed her better if she fell over as a child, let alone after injuries caused by her own hand. But her four year old doesnât need to know that. âShe wasnât there, so my friend looked after me instead.â Her nanny had found her cowering in the corner of her room, half healed and hysterical. It taken the woman what felt like forever to calm Regina down, sheâd sat down on the floor beside her, wrapped her in a hug and let her cry until she couldnât anymore.
âBut,â his fingers stop their tracing of it and Regina presses a smacking kiss to his palm that makes him grin for a moment. âHow comes itâs still there?â
âSometimes things leave marks, baby, but it doesnât hurt anymore. I promise,â she adds when he chews at his bottom lip.
âDid you fall off the couch like I did?â He asks, all innocent with the idea of a mother hurting their child enough to leave scars the furthest thought from his mind (she hopes it never does enter his thoughts, hopes he never finds out that parents like her mother exist, even though she knows thatâs probably wishful thinking).
âNo,â she smiles and inches closer like sheâs about to tell him a secret, and whispers, âbut I did fall out of a tree.â She has no intention of ever telling him that falling out of the tree had mostly just bruised her eight-year-old pride, but it had ruined her dress and when she made her way back to their manor her mother had been waiting, taken one look at Reginaâs disheveled appearance and whipped her bloody until âthe lesson sank inâ. She doesnât think thereâs any harm in letting him think she got the scar from a misadventure in her childhood.
Henryâs eyes are wide and heâs got a grin spreading across his little face at that. âCan I climb trees?â
Regina huffs out a laugh and says âMaybe when youâre older⌠and definitely not before this comes off.â She taps at the cast around his wrist before pressing a quick kiss to it.
âIs that gonna help it get better faster?â Henry gasps.
âOf course! Mommyâs kisses are magic,â she tells him, and if only that were true in this world, but Henry looks over the moon at the mere thought despite her not being able to make the pain go away last night. Just as he goes to snuggle back under the duvet with her (itâs still early after all, even without a town emergency pulling her from her bed on a day off) Henry pulls back, head tilted to the side and lips pursed.
He darts forward to press a slightly damp, smacking kiss right above the tear at the corner of her mouth. âI kissed it better for you, mommy!â He grins up at her before flopping back down onto her pillow and curling up as close as he can get, oblivious to the way her heart skips at how easy, and giving he is with affection towards her.
He may be an accident prone child, she thinks as she pulls him closer and declares that theyâre going to have a lazy day much to his delight, but sheâll die before letting anything more serious than an ill-timed somersault from the couch hurt him.
I blame myself for this. After seeing some set pictures from the new season and some talks with my dear puppies, this came to mind. Big thanks to @reginasevilpanda for looking this over for me :-*
âMom? You okay?â
His mother sits on his bed in the mansion, her back turned to him, when Henry steps into his soon-to-be old room.
He can hear her sniffle, subtle but still there. She probably doesnât want him to see her like this.
âIâm fine,â Regina replies while straightening up and moving a hand over her face.
Henry smiles. His mom is always fine, even when sheâs not. Right now she is clearly not, not that she would ever admit that. Heâs leaving his childhood home, leaving his mother to go to college.
He moves to sit next to her on the bed. The room is practically empty. Most of his stuff is already packed in boxes and on its way to his new room in college. The furniture is still there but the room lacks his personal touch. It feels weird, even to him. It must be even harder for his mom.
âOf course you are,â he answers with a knowing smile and takes one of her hands into his. Regina looks at him and tries to smile as well. But it doesnât quite reach her eyes.
âYou know, itâs okay to cry.â
She laughs wetly at this, holds his hand tighter and leans slightly into him.
âI always told you that when you were sad or mad. You were convinced that boys donât cry, that itâs weak to cry,â she tells him softly, her head leaning on his shoulder.
âBut itâs not.â
âI know.â
âDo you?â
Regina lifts her head from his shoulder and looks him into his eyes. âIâm going to miss you terribly, Henry.â
Again, he smiles. âI know. Iâm going to miss you too,â he says and draws her into a tight hug. They stay like this for a while longer, nobody saying a word, just enjoying the moment and the closeness.
Regina is the first to break the silence. âYou probably need to get going. I donât want you to drive in the dark on this death trap on two wheels.â She breaks the hug gently, moving to stand up from the bed, while purposely ignoring his sigh and growled âMomâ on her comment about his motorcycle.
Henry only chuckles. âOkay.â
They both move to leave the room to go downstairs when Regina stops in front of his chair, his striped scarf in her hands. âAre you not taking this with you?â She sounds sad.
âMom, itâs summer. I wonât need it now.â
âOh,â she simply says and drapes the scarf back over the back of the chair. âI can send it to you when itâs getting colder.â She still stares at the woolen scarf, which accompanied him for so long, softly running her fingers over the material. It clearly holds a lot of memories to her.
âKeep it.â
âWhat?â Regina utters distracted, lost in a memory.
âKeep it,â he repeats, âyou need it more than I do.â
She looks at him in confusion but quickly realizes that he isnât talking about proper clothing for cold weather. He isnât talking about the weather at all.
âThank you.â She smiles genuinely now, already tearing up again. âI love you, my little prince.â
Iâm not even sorry. Blame @the-notsoevil-queen, She coulda talked me out of this. She chose not to. Thanks to @ninzied @dee-thequeenbee and @belleoftheballpoint for suffering so that this was grammatically correct.
When Whale brings back Daniel, Regina pays the price.
Season 2 divergent. Because I can. Major character death ahead lads. Donât say I didnât warn you. Usual warnings that come with character deaths. Graphic as fuck descriptions of blood, and yeah, shit goes wrong in the stables with Daniel guys, tread lightly, I guess?
She never saw this coming.
Sheâs thought about death and how, eventually, it would come for her often throughout her years. As a child, too young to understand why Motherâs room behind the fireplace was off limits (just that it was), Regina had had nightmares of Cora ripping out her small, developing heart for getting grass stains on her petticoats. Sheâd daydreamed about slipping beneath the surface of her bath water as Queen and never coming back up, of slipping over the balcony railings and falling down, down, down into blackness and away from humiliation and pain night after night. But a servant would ultimately knock on the door, or a fairy with misguided good intentions would catch her, and eventually Regina stopped courting Death and became her.
Pitchforks and burning at stakes is honestly how she imagined this would go. Especially since the curse broke and everything she held dear shattered around her by her own fucking hands. She didnât think it would happen like this, because of him, and she was starting to hopeâshe let it twist and carve its way into her beingâthat she might yet live to see her son forgive her.
She really should be used to being wrong by now.
You stupid, insolent, little girl, Motherâs voice hisses. Did you really believe you could have this?
Daniel is in ashes at her feet, and Regina has one hand over her mouth and one over her midriff, vainly trying to keep the blood in. The shears that heâd lodged deep into her gut, once, twice before sheâd managed to stop himâkill himâclatter to the floor, staining it with drops of red. Where did he get those? is all she has time to think before her knees give out.
1200ish words of pure silliness because all I can picture having seen those Jared photos is what Lanaâs reaction would be. And how I kinda want to see her say âHenry Daniel Mills!â which lead to Reginaâs reaction. Then when I spoke to @the-notsoevil-queen about it she encouraged me instead of doing what she probably should have done. Which is tell me to stop, and to never, ever write again. Unedited because I am tipsy, bordering on drunk, and fuck that noise.
Iâm sorry.
By the time Robin and Roland get home, hiking gear peeled off by the back door and left in the utility room, Regina is sitting in the living room. Olivia is entertaining herself on the floor with her baby gym, seemingly unaware that her mother is inches away from snapping. She canât think about what Henry is doing right now or she might tip over into a complete and utter breakdown.
âRegina?â Robinâs voice calls out, Olivia shrieks in delight at the sound, and she is vaguely aware of them moving from the kitchen to the front of the house. âHello there, Trouble.â Robin greets Liv first, squats down beside where sheâs pushed herself onto her hands and knees and presses a kiss to her wispy curls. âRegina? You alright, love?â
âMmhmm.â Speaking is not something she can do right now. She keeps her head in hands and eyes screwed shut as she nods, tense and twitching.
âWhatâs wrong with Regina?â Roland is there too.
âWhy donât you go and get yourself cleaned up, son?â
Roland grumbles, still clearly wanting to know what is going on but Robin hushes him and she hears him sigh before small feet are thundering through the hall and up the stairs. She doesnât even call out for him to be careful.
âWhatâs wrong?â He asks, his hand reaching out to rub soothingly up and down her spine as he sits next to her.
âI really, really, canât talk about it right now.â She knows sheâs not making any sense right now, but honestly she might still be in shock.
âAlright⌠Iâm going to assume that thereâs no new town-wide disaster, based on how my phone didnât ring while we were out. And Olivia is clearly in one piece.â Regina opens her eyes a little at that in time to see Olivia look over at her name, one fist in her mouth as she grins around it at them. âSo that leaves something happening with Henry.â
She lets out a slightly hysterical laugh, hands still pressing tight into her temples. Robin falls silent, though he continues to rub up and down her spine with one hand while the other drops to squeeze at her knee.
âLove, Iâm sure itâs not as b-â
âDonât,â she warns, looking up slightly and holding out a finger to cut him off. âDonât you dare. He is fourteen. Barely fourteen! He should be lying to me about doing his homework while he reads comic books, okay? Not⌠he should notâŚ.â she canât even say the words, and she knows the pink staining her cheeks hasnât faded at all since walking in on her son, on her baby boy doing⌠doing that! âOh god.â She drops her head back into her hands.
Olivia crawls into her line of vision, frowning a little now that her attention has moved from chewing her toys to where Regina is half way through a freak out over her big brother. She takes a deep breath, picks up the baby and settles her on her lap when Liv pats at her knees, and tries very hard to forget this afternoon ever happened.
âIâm gonna need a little more than that to understand whatâs gone on today, Regina.â
âHenry didnât know Olivia and I were back from Grannyâs. We came home instead because Neal wasnât well.â Her leg is bouncing a little in her agitation so Robin reaches over to take Olivia. âI mean, I didnât know he was home - I thought he was out with his friends! His door wasn't even fully shut, I just wanted to put his laundry on his bedâŚâ
âSo, you walked in onâŚâ
âHim⌠and VioletâŚâ
Robinâs eyebrows shoot up a little at that. âI take it Violet is no longer here.â
âWhat?â Regina frowns over at him. âThey were skyping.â She can tell by the look on his face heâs still not completely sure on what sheâd seen. âRobin he had his shirt of and was⌠posing for her!â
Heâs silent for a minute before he clenches his jaw and lifts one hand to hide his mouth. Then she hears the sputter of a poorly smothered laugh. âAre you actually laughing at me right now?â And he canât even speak properly, the bastard, so he just shakes his head at her while his shoulders shudder. âI can not believe you are laughing right now.â
âRegina,â he says, managing to calm down a little when she goes to stand. âHey, no, come on love. It is not that bad.â
Not that bad? Henry is her baby, she could have quite happily gone to her grave never seeing that. âHe is fourteen,â is all she manages to get out as she deflates a little, sinking back into the couch cushions and placing her hand over her eyes. Liv wriggles her way from her fatherâs lap to hers, pushing and pulling until Regina shifts enough to cradle the little girl to her chest. âHe is barely fourteen,â she repeats.
There are still traces of amusement on Robinâs face as he deems it safe enough to move closer, throwing one arm around her shoulders and settling in beside her. âYes, he is fourteen, with a girlfriend that he has been with for quite a few months now. Iâm not saying itâs alright,â he adds, cutting off her argument. âOkay? Iâm not saying that at all.â
âButâŚâ
âBut⌠I may not have grown up around all the technology of this world, but I do know that if Iâd had access to skype and thought it would impress a pretty girl, Iâdâve probably done the same thing.â
âIs that supposed to make me feel better?â
He laughs a little again, presses a kiss to her frown lines and says, âItâs supposed to make you realise that it couldâve been much worse, and remind you that you raised an incredible young man. One who is probably just as embarrassed, if not more so, as you are right now, milady.â
He smirks at her when she scrunches her face up a little, and thereâs a very small part of her that wants to smack it off because itâs that stupid little shit-eating one he gets when he knows heâs right, and when he knows that she knows heâs right. And he is. He is completely right if the way Henry had turned beet red, screamed mom! and rushed to yank a hoodie on after sheâd dropped the piled of folded laundry is anything to go by.
âHave you talked to him about it yet?â She scrunches her nose up again, because no she hasnât spoken to him other than a shocked utterance of Henry Daniel Mills! and a sarcastic well that makes it so much better, after heâd stuttered out that she was meant to be at the loft for Liv and Neal to have a playdate. âDo you think that maybe sooner rather than later might the way to go here?â
She ignores that, sheâll talk to Henry soon, she will, but she still needs a minute. And a drink. âWeâre never getting Roland a laptop, ok?â Robin just laughs again before he nods. Sighing Regina nods before sheâs hugging the baby tighter and dropping a kiss to her chubby cheek when she looks up from playing with her toes to grin at them. âAnd Olivia is staying this little forever.â

sun: what you said when you saw me in a new light.
I havenât written Red Beauty before but Iâve been jonesing to because Iâm still hella bitter that A&E didnât have the balls to make it canon. They had amazing chemistry and Iâm never not going to be angry about it. Anyway, this is like 500+ words of season four canon divergent goodness.
It isnât until she forced her husband over the town line that Belle realizes just how isolated she was from the rest of Storybrooke. Her only constant companion had been Rumple and without him, her days are unnervingly quiet and there is only so much comfort she can get from her books.
She takes to sitting and reading at Grannyâs. While almost no one approaches her, the sound of people bustling about around her, laughing and talking makes her feel less lonely. On top of that, her tea cup is never empty.
And then thereâs Ruby.
During the lulls in service, the waitress takes to sitting and chatting with her. They had been close once, before Rumple, and it isnât until Ruby sits in front of her and talks to her with a friendly smile on her lips does Belle realize just how much she missed her.
Their conversations are light-hearted, usually focused on whatever novel sheâs reading that day, but thereâs an understanding look in Rubyâs eyes that lets her know that she understands that she really needs to not think.
Sheâs hurt, mind still reeling from the extent of her husbandâs betrayal. She always knew what he was capable of, the horrific acts that he committed, but never did she think that he was capable of doing that to her.
The pain of it lingers in the back of her mind, a consistent dull ache that occasionally bursts in flares of unbearable heartache where she canât help the tears that dribble down her cheeks. Normally these moments hit when sheâs alone but occasionally and embarrassingly it happens in public when someone gives her a particularly pitying look.
Today, itâs one of her novels. Itâs a riveting tale of romance and adventure where the villain falls in love with the heroine and willingly changes his ways, changes his heart, in order to do whatâs right and save her. It hurts.
Why couldnât he do that for her?
She doesnât even realize sheâs crying until her tears hit the page and sheâs mortified because itâs the middle of the lunch rush and literally everyone in Storybrooke is here.
She drops her book on the table and buries her face in her hands, trying to shield her wet face from prying eyes. She doesnât notice someone sliding into the booth beside her until slender fingers slide into her hair. She jumps at the unexpected contact.
âHey, youâre going to be okayâŚâ  Ruby says in a low comforting voice. âYouâre going to be okayâŚâ
Her body immediately relaxes at the sound of her voice and Belle doesnât realize until that moment just how comfort she takes in Rubyâs presence. Without even thinking about, she leans into her, her head resting against her shoulder. Someone shouts for her in the back and Ruby turns to give them a vicious glare before she turns her attention back to her, features immediately softening.
âHow?â Belle chokes out, hating the way her voice breaks.
Rubyâs fingers leave her hair to rest tenderly on her cheek.
âBecause youâre amazing and strong and though you donât think so now, someday itâs going to stop hurting.â
âBut what if it doesnât?â
âThen I got you.â
send me a word + a pairing and iâll write you a short fic! đ
Drabble based on spoilers from the set for 7.01, with Jared, Lana and a motorbike. Â
The air is crisp, that morning, when Regina pads outside to say goodbye. There should be so many words, right now, but she only feels a grip in her throat and an insuppressible desire to cry. Henry is already there, backpack incremented in size and Augustâs motorbike ready to start its trip.
âOkay, mom,â he says reaching out for her hand. âI think I got everything.â
Regina nods, gulps, squeezing his fingers. âPromise meâŚâ
ââŚI will be careful,â he ends. âAnd I will call every night, I swear. And come to see you guys often.â
She tries a smile, that doesnât pair well with her heavy heart. Heâs so tall, she muses, when he envelopes her in a hug. Strangely enough, she focuses on his height not to think about the rest. Iâll miss you so much, she half-sobs in his shoulder, praying her eyes will remain dry.
âI will too,â he smiles. âBye, mom.â
She stands there and watches him go, sprinting the bike, a dreadful feeling grasping at her heart. A premonition, maybe. She presses two fingers on her lips, stares at the empty road.Â
Prompt :) Season 1 Regal Believer angsty fluff. Henry has a flu and he has to stay at home. He wakes up with a fever, but doesn't want to admit it. Regina figures it out and stays at home with him. Henry wants Emma at first, but as he's burning up, the only one he needs is his Mom, the one who soothed every pain of his since he was a baby.
This prompt was sitting way too long in my inbox, considering the one-shot was written months ago too.
Big thanks to @spiral-nebula for beta-ing (and prompting me ;)).
Season 1 Regal Believer feels ahead!

Regina peeks into Henryâs room. Last night he came home sniffing and with arough voice, thick from a cold. He was picky at dinner, didnât eat much andclaimed he wanted to do his homework, so Regina let him go upstairs. She knowsbetter than try to push herself back into his life right now. Ever since he ranaway to find his âreal momâ (the words still pain her), he put a distancebetween them.
The room is a huge mess, everything scattered on the floor, school books, pencils, clothes, comic books. This isnât like Henry, heâs usually very neatand tidy for a ten-year-old (she surprisingly doesnât mind the mess though). The desk lamp is still switched on but she finds her little boy curled up onthe bed, fast asleep. He hasnât bothered to change into his pajamas or draw upthe blanket around him. How poorly did he feel?
She tries to pull out his blanket from under his body without disturbinghis much needed sleep. He only stirs a little but stays asleep. She draws theblanket up to his shoulders and presses a light kiss to his brow. âSleep tight,my little prince.â Regina switches off the light, leaves the door of his room abit ajar and heads to her own bedroom. Maybe itâs just a 24-hour-cold, heâllprobably feel better in the morning, after a good nightâs sleep.
He doesnât.
She checks on him right after she awakes. Sits down on the bed next to himand lays a hand on his forehead. Itâs warm, a bit too warm for her liking.
âWhat are you doing?â
She takes the hand off his head and cups his cheek. âSweetie, youâre sick,I think youâve got a fever.â
He turns his head to the other side to get away from her touch. âNo, Idonât.â
âYou feel pretty warm to me, Henry. Please let me check?â
âNo,â he says and pulls the blankets (he must have gotten more during thenight) over his head.
âIâll get the thermometer.â she stands up again. âIf you have a fever, Iâllstay home with you, okay?â
There comes a faint âNo.â from under the blankets. He feels miserable andshe knows it.
She closes her eyes briefly. âHenry, please. Let me help you.â
âI donât need you to help me.â
She sighs. This isnât working. She canât let him be sick here at homewithout doing something. So she pulls at the last straw, and she doesnât likeit one bit.
âDo you want me to get ... Emma?â she asks the bulk of blankets. Her voiceis soft and tired; she knows the answer to that question before she even askedit.
âYes,â he responds immediately.
It crushes her heart. Her little Prince doesn't need her, doesn't want her,he wants his real mother, a woman he met only a few weeks ago, a woman whodoesn't know how Henry is when he's sick. That he's all clingy, doesn't want tolet go. Likes to be propped up in front of the TV, watching cartoons, claimsthat he never falls asleep during them (he barely makes it through the openingtheme). Likes his tea with a lot of honey, to sooth his sore throat. Alwayscomplains about the cold wet cloth on his forehead when he has a fever, butsighs every time she changes them, in relief.
That woman doesn't know the heartache Regina's been through with every feverand ache. That woman knows nothing.
And yet, Regina stands with a heavy sigh, one hand padding on the manyblankets, and says lowly âOkay.â Because who's she to deny her son?
She's in the hall, dialing the blonde womanâs number, everything in herrevolts to the idea of calling her. But if it helps Henry, she has no choice.
She hears something behind her, she jumps a little and turns around.
Henry is standing at the doorway to his room, looking at her tiredly, hispajamas (he must have changed into them during the night as well; he missed abutton) are soaked through with sweat.
âOh honey, go back to bed. Iâll call her, I promise, sheâll be here soon.âShe tries to push him softly back into his room but he resists.
âNo. Can you not call her?â he utters.
âBut you justâŚ-â
She gets interrupted by his arms encircling her waist, his head lays heavyagainst her chest.
Regina lets her phone slip back into her pocket and holds him to hertightly. She doesnât ask what changed his mind all of a sudden. She just holdson to him.
Until a cough fit rumbles through him.
âOkay, I think that was enough standing up for now. Letâs get you back tobed,â she says while stirring him into his room. âIâll make you some tea, andget you some cough drops, okay?â
Henry nods, slipping back under his blankets.
On her way downstairs she thinks that maybe he needs her after all.
