Dan Abnett has this strength of taking a snapshot of a setting that is almost a parody of itself and making that snapshot feel believable and grounded.
Like all the little details about subsector trade ramifications, planetary and guild politics, and the details of local businesses that he doesn’t just include, he makes plot relevant in his Eisenhorn/Ravenor series.
Or taking Guilliman from a bland character no one really cared about to a believable, likable character with understandable and sympathetic motivations in Know No Fear.
Interrogator Carl Thonius from 40k 'Inquisitor Ravenor' novel series. a wip / sketch
really looking forward to finish this one 👀 someday
The first trilogy 'Eisenhorn' is great but 'Ravenor' just completely hooked me in it's outstanding characters and narrative!
If you enjoy Rogue Trader you should absolutely go check both them out right now I'm staring right into your soul
Random 40K Fiction Thought
So, I'm reading Ravenor Rogue, and I'm up to the part where they're discussing WTF was that, after the fight with the Tyranids, and like...I am aware of the dates, but I wasn't...AWARE of the fact that they take place in the settings' past rather than present, y'know?
But also, man, they are really trying to sell these guys aren't they? I gotta wonder; how much To Sell Toys (as the Transformers wiki puts it) is going on here? Was there a new Tyranid-related product that came out in *checks* 2007?
Sidenote, is there any fiction or Lore that explains how Ravenor broke up with the Eldar?
Sidenote sidenote, it's interesting how in the Eisenhorn books, Kara is referred to as "stocky" and "muscular" and generally does not convey that she's notably attractive, whereas in the Ravenor books she's "voluptuous", and multiple characters think about how sexy she is a lot. Did Mr. Abnett change his mind about her appearance at some point, or are we supposed to take this as Eisenhorn preferring 'em skinny or what?
